Support Rumos Surgery

Huge update: Surgery is now over and Rumo is in recovery

It’s been two long surgeries, two even longer recovery periods and several visits to the vet for brave little Rumo, but things are finally looking better. Rumo is now 100% metal free and there’s a good chance that he gets to keep his leg! The implant was tested positive for the resistant bacteria and now that it's out things are looking very promising. Future updates will hopefully show a much more healthy dog :-)

The leg is still stiff and Rumo still has a long journey of recovery and physiotherapy ahead and as such I have decided to leave up this fundraiser a little longer as it might help a little with the bills ahead.

Meet Rumo: my little Cocker Spaniel from Bulgaria

Rumo had a rough start on his life. As a pup he was involved in an accident which damaged one of his hind legs. Rumo was found limp and wandering the streets. Fortunately, he got taken to a rescue organization where his leg was surgically treated. The surgery left him with a shorter and stiff paw with limited mobility. We recently started training with a little plateau shoe to train muscles in his short leg and support the hip, trying to regain some mobility and prevent overly wear on his other hind leg. Despite the harsh start, Rumo is a happy, trusting and playful dog who loves fetching sticks, snoozing in the sun or cooling off in his little pool.

Recently Rumo has gotten a wound on his bad leg that repeatedly reopens. This has resulted in several trips to the veterinarians for consultations and antibiotic treatments to fend off infections. During the last consultation I was informed that Rumo had contracted a multi-resistant bacterium and it was likely that a surgery was necessary to either remove the implant in his leg or as a final resort, the leg itself, since the bacteria likely resides within the implant itself. The surgery will be expensive and unfortunately since Rumo was damaged when I took him in, no insurance companies have been willing to cooperate.

The goal of this fundraiser is not to cover the entire operation or the following treatments necessary, but simply to bring the costs down to a manageable size that I’d be able to pay off. I am currently a student working two jobs trying to provide for both Rumo and myself as best as I can. I am hoping to maybe be able to raise a little of the money here to provide Rumo with the best possible treatment and recovery options, so he can play and run as far as his little paws carry him.

Darf ich vorstellen: Rumo - meinen kleinen Cocker Spaniel aus Bulgarien 

Rumo hatte es nicht immer leicht. Als Welpe war er in einen Unfall verwickelt, bei dem eines seiner Hinterbeine verletzt wurde. Glücklicherweise wurde er zu einer Rettungsorganisation gebracht, wo sein Bein operiert werden konnte. Durch die Operation ist eine seiner Hinterpfoten kürzer, steif und nur noch eingeschränkt beweglich. Seit kurzem üben wir mit einem kleinen Plateau-Schuh das Laufen, um die Muskeln in seinem kurzen Bein zu trainieren und die Hüfte zu unterstützen. Trotz des stolperigen Starts ist Rumo ein fröhlicher, vertrauensvoller und verspielter Hund, der es liebt, Stöckchen zu holen, in der Sonne zu dösen oder sich in seinem kleinen Pool abzukühlen. 

Vor kurzem hat Rumo eine Wunde an seinem kranken Bein bekommen, die sich immer wieder öffnet. Dies führte zu mehreren Besuchen bei Tierärzten für Untersuchungen und Antibiotika-Behandlungen, um Infektionen abzuwehren. Während der letzten Kontrolle wurde mir mitgeteilt, dass Rumo sich einen multiresistenten Keim zugezogen hat und eine Operation erforderlich ist. Das Implantat in seinem Bein muss entfernt werden, da sich die Bakterien wahrscheinlich hinter dem Implantat festgesetzt haben. Eine Amputation als letzte Möglichkeit ist ebenfalls nicht auszuschließen. Die Operation wird teuer, und durch seine Vorbelastung ist die Übernahme durch eine Versicherung für Rumo kaum eine Option. 

Ziel dieser Spendenaktion ist nicht die Kosten der gesamte Operation oder die folgenden erforderlichen Behandlungen abzudecken, sondern die Kosten einfach auf eine überschaubare Größe zu reduzieren, die zu bewältigen ist. Zurzeit bin ich Studentin und arbeite in zwei Jobs, um Rumo und mich so gut wie möglich zu versorgen. Ich hoffe, dass ich hier vielleicht etwas Geld sammeln kann, um Rumo die bestmöglichen Behandlungs- und Erholungsmöglichkeiten zu bieten, damit er spielen und so weit rennen kann, wie seine kleinen Pfoten ihn tragen.
