Help Jill get to International Triathlon Union World Triathlon Grand Final, September 2018

It was all a fluke.

Jill’s always been athletic, but she never completed in a triathlon until 2011, when a colleague at work convinced her to compete in a Try-A-Tri (200m swim, 20km bike, 2km run).

On the morning of the race, she registered last minute at the exact deadline. During the swim, she got kicked in the head, punched in the side and came up gasping for air. Cycling was a bit easier, being the strongest of her three sports, but the run was brutal.  She wanted to quit – until a fellow competitor passed her, patted her shoulder and said, “you can do this… it’s just running”.  She was so proud when she finished and ran to check the standings.  As she scrolled further and further down, she finally found her name – dead last. Disqualified. She was mortified.

But her competitive spirit forced her to have another go and redeem herself. Over the next few years, she competed in triathlons with the mantra: “I’m a completer, not a competer”.  She became hooked on racing and wanting to better herself - and she started working her way up the ranks, placing higher and higher with each race.

Then, the ball dropped.

In 2014, just as she was gearing up for a strong racing season and training for a half-ironman, her marriage dissolved and her plans to continue competing fell by the wayside. She became a full-time, single mom and all of a sudden, time for training became scarce. She didn’t compete for the rest of the year, but eventually, she got back out there and competed when she could.

A new beginning—and a second chance.

2017 brought the Canadian Triathlon Championships and Ottawa CAMTRI American Cup, a race to qualify for Worlds as part of Team Canada.

The course ran alongside her place of work and signs were up, but it wasn’t on her radar. Some colleagues asked if she was racing and she said no.

But her training partner had other plans.

He took her down to the event on Friday night; he told her it was just to “watch some of the events”. Before she knew it, he had registered Jill for the race. She spent the next 36 hours in a total panic: buying new tires, new goggles, doing an open water swim (the first in almost a year) and trying to calm her nerves.

And wouldn’t you know it; she qualified to compete in the Worlds.

Jill needs your help.

Jill’s super stoked to go but the price tag to get her there is more than she can manage.  She has to cover all costs on her own and there's many to consider:

-          Roundtrip airfare - $2,000
-          Accommodations/food - $2,200
-          Uniform and equipment - $800

Not to mention bike transport, transportation, Visa, etc

GRAND TOTAL = $5,000

Let’s help her get to Auz and race her heart out for Canada!
