Wie zijn we?

Wij zijn een collectief van jonge reportagemakers: journalist Arne Gillis, cameraman Wouter Elsen, geluidsman Eneas Mentzel en fotografe Annemie van Roey. Begin mei trokken we naar Senegal om een reportage te draaien over de talibés.

Excusez, talibé?

Talibé betekent letterlijk ‘leerling’ in het Arabisch. De Koranscholen waar deze leerlingen les volgen, zijn wijdverspreid in Senegal. Volgens de Verenigde Naties zijn er zo’n vijftigduizend studenten, tussen de vier en de vijftien jaar oud.

Senegal is een islamitisch land, en mensen vinden het belangrijk dat hun kinderen opgroeien met de islamitische waarden die beschreven staan in de Koran.

Maar omdat de Senegalese overheid de Koranscholen niet subsidieert, krijgen de islamleraren, of marabout in het Wolof, dikwijls te maken met een nijpend gebrek aan middelen: ouders blijven hun kinderen sturen, maar de leraars hebben dikwijls niet de mogelijkheid om goed voor de kinderen te zorgen.

Veel kinderen moeten dan ook uren per dag op straat bedelen. Om te kunnen eten, maar ook om geld in te zamelen, dat terechtkomt bij de marabout.

Jammer genoeg maken veel marabouts misbruik van deze situatie. Ze slaan kinderen die te weinig bijeen weten te bedelen, en leiden met hun familie een luxueus leventje met de ingezamelde fondsen. Volgens Human Rights Watch zijn er gevallen bekend van marabouts die op die manier meer dan 100.000 euro per jaar ‘verdienen’. Een mooie som in een land waar een derde van de bevolking rondkomt met één euro per dag. Diezelfde organisatie sabelt de praktijk neer als hedendaagse slavernij en mensenhandel.

Niet zelden ontvluchten kinderen hun school, waarna ze op straat terechtkomen.

In onze documentaire “Talibé: een jeugd in het teken van Allah” volgen we talibés op school en op straat, vinden we een gevluchte talibé en spreken we met marabouts en straathoekwerkers. Onze bedoeling is om een genuanceerd, en meeslepend verhaal te vertellen dat inzicht biedt in het leven van de talibés.

Waar gaan we naartoe met ons project?

De videoreportage wordt dit najaar vertoond op het Canvas-programma ‘Vranckx’ (Vlaamse Radio & Televisie). Er zal ook een tekstreportage verschijnen. De toezegging daarvoor is momenteel nog in bespreking.

Waarom steunen?

De realisatie van dit project heeft veel tijd en geld gekost. Tijd hebben we gecompenseerd met de passie om dit verhaal naar buiten te brengen, maar om enkele financiële kraters te vullen doen we graag beroep op crowdfunding.

Jullie centen gaan concreet naar:

- Reiskosten: gemaakte kosten ter plaatse (vliegtickets, vervoer ter plaatse, fixer/vertaler, …)

- Praktische kosten: materiaalverzekering, visa, …

- Afwerking: color correction, mixen van het geluid, montage

“Talibé: een jeugd in het teken van Allah” is een productie van vijfduizend euro. Ondanks alle creativiteit die we aan de dag hebben gelegd om deze productiekosten zo laag mogelijk te houden, blijft dit een groot bedrag.

Who are we?

We are a collective of young documentary makers: journalist Arne Gillis, cameraman Wouter Elsen, sound recordist Eneas Mentzel and photographer Annemie Van Roey. We went to Senegal, May 2015, to make a documentary about talibés.

Say what, talibé?

Talibé litterally means 'scholar' in Arabic. The Koranic schools they attend are widespread in Senegal. According to the United Nations there are more than 50,000 talibés, all between the age of 4 and 15.

Senegal is an Islamic country and the inhabitants consider it important that their children grow up learning the Islamic values that are described in the Koran.

But the Senegalese government doesn't subsidize the Koranic schools at the moment, which means that the Islamic teachers (or marabouts in Wolof) often suffer from a lack of resources. Parents keep on sending their children to the Koranic schools but the teachers just don't have the means to take good care of the children.

As a result, a lot of talibés have to go on the street to beg many hours per day. Begging to eat, but sometimes also for money, which they have to deliver to the marabout.

Sadly there are marabouts who take advantage of the situation. They beat the children who don't succeed in acquiring enough money and tend to live in luxury with the money the talibés collected. According to Human Rights Watch there are marabouts who 'earn' more than 100.000 euro per year. That is a nice 'wage' in a country where one third of the population has to survive with one euro per day. Human Rights Watch labels these practices as modern slavery and human trafficking.

Very often the kids try to run away from the schools, whereafter they end up on the streets.

In our documentary "Talibé: a youth devoted to Allah" we follow talibés in theirs schools and on the street, we go out and try to find talibés who have fled from their schools and we manage to speak with marabouts and street workers. Our goal is to tell a nuanced and immersive story to provide insight into the life of talibés.

What will happen with the documentary?

The documentary will be shown this fall on 'Vranckx' (Canvas, Flemish Radio & Television). In addition to the broadcoast we will publish a written article as well.

Why support us?

We invested alot of time and money in order to realise this project. We happily invested our time in the documentary because of our passion to cover this interesting story, but to make sure we don't end up with a huge financial crater we call upon crowdfunding to help us finish the documentary!

Your money will go to:

- Travel costs: to cover our expenses made in Senegal (air ticket, transportation, fixer and translator, ...)
- Practical expenses: material insurance, visa,...
- The finishing off: color correction, sound mixing, editing, ...

"Talibé: a youth devoted to Allah" has been a production of 5000 euro. Despite our efforts to keep the expenses as low as possible, it's still a large amount of money.
