In The Nest Midwifery is calling upon our community to share abundance with one of our dear clients. She is a Penobscot woman, pregnant with her first child, who is working to reclaim indigenous birth knowledge. It is a gift to walk alongside her in this journey. We believe that it is her right to give birth on her ancestral land, on her own terms, outside of medical institutions built upon white supremacy. As white settlers living on stolen Wabanaki land, we owe her reparations to ensure she will be well supported and thrive throughout her pregnancy, birth, and transition into parenthood. Let’s set this young family up for success and invest in a strong, resilient indigenous future.
Read on for more about Mitchell:

Hello! My name is Mitchell. I’m a Penobscot mixed media artist living and working in Portland Maine. My work expresses my personal process dealing with intergenerational trauma, and trauma that I’ve experienced as an indigenous woman throughout my life.

I am pregnant with my first child! This is an exciting and difficult time for me, as it is for everyone, surviving this pandemic. I’ve spent my entire pregnancy in isolation, and I fear that will continue even after I give birth. Nevertheless, it is with gratitude and honor that I will give birth to the next generation of indigenous people on my ancestral lands. Raising strong, empowered, resilient children is my blessing and duty that I will cherish forever.

This Gofundme is based in terms of reparations. I believe that reparations are the one thing that should be reserved exclusively for white settlers of this land. It is not the place of black, brown, and indigenous people to pay for repairing colonial harm. In saying this, I believe that the funds raised should be coming from white settlers. If you feel moved as a black, brown or indigenous person to support my transition into motherhood, I would be honored to receive your support.
