Reopen Bath Approach Golf Course

Hi everyone. It's now nearly 18 months since the temporary closure of Bath Approach Golf Course for the first coronavirus lockdown, back in March 2020. Sadly a new commercial operator has not been found, and whilst the Council has continued to mow the fairways, they are no longer able to fund the full maintenance of the site to include specialist care of the greens. A group of residents and golfers have remained in discussion with the Council to look at ways to allow golf to be played again, and a low-cost solution is now on the table for the greens and tee areas on the 18 hole course to be restored and maintained by a local charity. To fund this work we are aiming to raise an initial £15,000. This would pay for the sprinkler system to be brought back into use, the tee areas to be tidied up, the greens to be cut, repaired and reseeded, plus an initial six months of regular maintenance. Once the course is up and running again, the intention is to re-establish ongoing funding by encouraging golfers to donate each time they play, and by once again offering club hire on site.

Bath Approach Course is an important and cherished green space, where generations of Bathonians and visitors have had their first introduction to golf, spent time with family and friends, and enjoyed the views across the city. It's far more than just a golf course, with open access for all - but to keep it this way in the long term ongoing funding is required, and golf is the best way to provide this. Residents have already shown their support for reopening the course by signing the petition to reopen the course at There are now very nearly 5,000 signatures.

Please consider donating to help restore this fantastic community facility. Pitch and putt has been played here for more than 60 years, and there are few other outdoor, family-friendly activities available in the city. It would be great to see people playing golf again soon. Any donation you can spare will be put to good use in restoring the course. Here are some estimated maintenance costs for specific tasks:

  • £50 pays for one hole to be maintained for a month
  • £200 pays for all the greens to be cut for a week
  • £500 would fund the reseeding of the grass on the greens
  • £1,000 would pay for the entire course to be maintained for a month

Smaller (or larger!) donations are of course very welcome indeed, so please contribute whatever you can. If everyone who signed the petition were to donate £3 then we'd reach the target of £15,000.

This special place is such a valuable asset to the city - let's get it up and running again.
