It has been a difficult year for all of us, but it has been especially difficult for my students and their families who had just arrived in the U.S. I really thought the students were getting the hang of how to "do school" and learning some useful phrases in English, and then covid and distance learning hit us all.  I certainly did not teach my most successful lessons, but my relationships with my students were unwavering. They all knew that no matter what the question or the time of day (and night), that I would do my best to help them out.

School is out, but my students are still in touch. So when one of my students reached out asking for help, I got right to it. I know how to navigate through the systems in place, and network to find the right people who are all set up to aid families in need. But the times they are a-crazy! Too many people in need and I'm afraid it is going to get worse. If we can all take care of our own how ever many degrees of separation, maybe enough people can get life jackets.
