Bringing No. One Market Place back to life!!!

The Saddlers, at No. One Market Place has been a landmark in Faversham town centre since the 17th century. Originally built as a bed and breakfast for sailors, it has served as a meeting place for people to feel welcome in Faversham for hundreds of years.

The business is owned by local Macknade-based brewer Boutilliers and Faversham based husband and wife caterers California Cravings and is designed to showcase the very best offering from both families. Managed by hand with care, they offer a range of food and drink to eat on site, takeaway options, a bottle shop, a tap room, and the space to sit comfortably and enjoy the good weather. Because both parent companies are local, family-oriented businesses, they strive to ensure that the supply chains stay as local as possible, the space is always open to all (including dogs!) and the staff is always friendly and welcoming.  At The Saddlers, you can now drink from a selection of over 60 different craft beers and ciders or choose from a large list of fine wines and cocktails. Add to this an excellent atmosphere, the best views in town, free wifi and all day food makes The Saddlers a one-stop destination for Faversham visitors and locals alike.

Over the years, the front of No. One Market Place has become worn. Rotting wood and years of paint being applied casually and haphazardly has belied the beautiful and intricate detail of the wood underneath. The Faversham Society, on their website, is quoted as saying  “The landmark building is in a very prominent location in the Market Place and is in relatively poor condition, needing significant restoration, and is in need of a use which would help to ensure that it is kept in good condition.”  – The Faversham Society.org

The team at The Saddlers accepted this as a direct call to action, as Market Place is the home of Faversham Town Council and represents the heart of Faversham. They felt it was their duty to ensure that every day that they are in possession, the strength and beauty of the building should improve. Last year, they made a substantial investment into the regeneration of the building by completely replacing the electrics, renovating the interior including a complete remodel of the bathrooms, replacing the kitchen floor, cleaning out the vents and radiators, replacing the boiler, sorting out the plumbing, and of course began the restoration work to the front of the building. They had to stop for the winter and, due to Covid and a world of other obstacles in recent months, have found themselves short to finish what they started. They write this to you….

We call to you as neighbours and friends to contribute to our   Bringing No. One Market Place back to life!!!   campaign by donating to our building works fund. It is our promise that all funds collected will go to the restoration of the aesthetic front and the preservation of the woodwork of the building. It is our understanding that we will all come and go but the work we do to the building will be a staple in the community for decades to come. Please help us revitalise this jewel in the crown of our towns centre by donating something small to the building that so many of enjoy every day.
