The Backstory
Most of you know that I have rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic auto-immune condition that mostly affects my knee joints. I've been dealing with some new and very expensive insurance issues this year trying to get Humira, the medication that slows the progression of the disease and brings down the inflammation and pain enough for me to walk and be mobile. Without it, my knees usually swell to the size of softballs and I will have very limited to no mobility and extreme pain very quickly. It is considered a "biologic" medication and, while there are other less expensive treatments, they are less effective and have really terrible side effects (think cancer drugs and steroids).
Insurance and Copay Assistance Shenanigans
With some new insurance bylaws and new copay assistance limits, I am on the hook for $2500 ($2000 for Sept and $500 for Oct) in order to cover my Humira for the rest of the year. After that amount, I will meet my out of pocket maximum for the year and my insurance will kick in.
Needless to say, this is a large amount and I am not eligible for any other copay assistance programs (believe me, I tried). Right now, I have the medication thankfully and the cost is sitting on my credit card, which is a large burden to bear.
Cost Breakdown
$3260/Month-Cost of Humira
$2000-cost of medication in Sept. Hanging out on my Credit card.
$500-what I need to meet my out of pocket maximum in Oct and get my insurance to kick in and pay the full fee.
