Renaissance Center for Justice

Donation protected

For the past two years, I have been in the process of building a center in Cape Coast, Ghana, that will eventually serve as a retreat center  that will provide respite for Black American activists and artists.

For nearly three decades I’ve dedicated my time to issues of social justice and equity.  The Renaissance Center for Justice, will be a communal space where people, who are part of the struggle, can meet, refuel and rejuvenate, so that they can reemerge with greater clarity and purpose. This, I feel, is especially important in today’s political atmosphere.

I fell in love with Ghana during my first trip to the country, a decade ago. I believe that Cape Coast, a fishing city along Ghana’s southern coast, is the perfect location the Renaissance Center for Justice, as it has a large African-American community and it houses the Cape Coast slave forts (an important piece of our history).

We broke ground two years ago and since then we have cleared the land, built a service access road, completed the center’s foundation, built the septic system, and wired the area for electricity. To date, all of the funding for this project has come out of my personal savings.

I would like to accelerate the completion of my project--I am now reaching out to family, friends and strangers, to push this endeavor forward!

We’re about $40K away from what we will need to complete the project, but we’re currently only asking for $15K, to cover the projected costs for the work that will be done in the next year.

All funding will go towards:

-Construction materials for the upper and lower levels (including brick, drywall, flooring, roofing, fixtures, etc)

-Labor—it’s very important to us that the Ghanaian workers are fairly compensated

-Any additional, necessary building permits

-Furnishings

-A generator

Incentives

We will offer these incentives for the following donation amounts:

$250 – for a weekend stay (for 2) at the retreat, upon completion

$500 – for a week-long stay (for 2) at the retreat, upon completion

$1000 – one of six guest suites named after you or the person of your choice (limited availability)

$2500 – library after them (as there will only be one library, we can only offer this to one donor!)

Any size donation will give you access to quarterly updates on the progress of construction, including pictures.

Guests of the retreat will receive tours of Cape Coast from a Ghanaian guide,  traditional Ghanaian meals made by an on-site cook, a cultural reconnection and a chance to share and support other activists and artists.

This venture will take some time but it’s something I strongly believe in and anything you can spare will help and be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much in advance.

If you have any questions about the retreat center and it’s construction, don’t hesitate to reach out.
