Hi! My name is Remington. Most humans call me Remy for short! I am a 1 ½ year old English Crème Retriever. Although I have an amazing disposition, in my short life, I have already faced some challenges and unfortunately will continue to face struggles throughout my life.
So here my story goes…Back in February of 2016, I met my human family for the first time. My human brother picked me out from a breeder called “Cream de la Cream Goldens” (Yoder, Colorado). I am so lucky to have been chosen from this loving family.
As I began to grow, my human mom noticed that my body started to do some weird things.
I began to walk with a limp on my front leg and my back leg began to turn outwards which caused me to walk funny. My mom took me to the vet and after some initial x-rays the vet had some extreme concerns (Thanks Dr. Bundy for watching out for me!), so he sent me to a canine orthopedic specialist. After my initial consultation/exam with the specialist, the caring vet said that he suspects that I have some concerns that needed to be explored further. He set me up for a CT scan on both my elbows and hips to help further diagnose my conditions. The kind vet said that eventually when I stop growing, I will need a CT scan on my ankles as well. So, after my first CT scans, it was determined that I have more serious genetic problems than first thought. I was diagnosed with elbow dysplasia (both elbows), advanced arthritis, and hip dysplasia (both hips). Not to mention my deformed back leg.
So, in November 2016, I had my first surgery (on both elbows). I saw this nice man named, Dr. Swaison who performed the surgery. He removed some bone from my Ulna (both sides) so as I grew, the hope would be that my bones will fit together better. This is the picture you see of me after surgery. WOW! That didn’t feel good. Unfortunately, my challenges were not over. I followed up with another surgeon (Dr. Miller) at CCO to evaluate my hips and back leg. My human mom and Dr. Miller had to decide which surgery I should do next (my hips or back deformed leg). The decision was to start with my hip. Since it was suggested that I have a full hip replacement on both hips, the doctor said that he would try what is called an FHO on the worse of the two hips because my human mom could not afford the total hip replacement x 2. An FHO is (Femoral Head Osteotomy) is the removal of the “ball” part of the ball-and-socket that makes up the hip joint. So, in March of 2017, I again went in for another surgery.
Since my FHO on my left hip, I am recovering quite nicely. I had to tackle under water treadmill therapy to help me get some strength back. So now I am awaiting surgery for my next battle, which is to fix my deformed back leg. From what I understand, this is going to be quite an extensive procedure. The vet will have to reposition (by breaking) my leg and placing a ring fixator on my leg. I will have pins attached to the fixator that also go into my bone. As you know, these surgeries are very expensive and have taken a toll on my human family. My mom is doing whatever she can to make sure that I feel better but that does come with an expense. For the rest of my life, I will have to be on special food to help keep the weight off so it doesn’t put a lot of pressure on my joints and medications to help manage my pain.
My mom updated the breeder (Cream de la Cream Goldens) with every appointment/procedure, and they only thing they could offer, is to “Replace” me with another puppy per a contract my human mom had signed. Can you believe a breeder would not have my best interest in mind? I don’t understand why the breeder just wants to replace me? What did I do? My mom wasn’t asking for a lot from the breeder either, but only to refund the money she paid for me so she can put that towards my medical bills. Nope, they still only offered to replace me. At this point, Isabelle B. (Cream de la Cream Goldens), has blocked my human mom's email, so my mom is not able to contact her. She completely blames my mom saying this is her fault because she neutered me too early. Unfortunately, that is incorrect and obviously, I was neutered under the guidance of a vet and well within the parameters of the contract my mom signed with the breeder.
Isabelle B. has completely avoided/ignored what has happened to me. Look, my human family chose me to be in their life, and I want to live a long, as pain free life as possible with them. That is why I am asking for some support I really don't want to think what the alternative would be for me.
It is hard for me to ask for support and donations, and I know it is a lot to ask for (we all have our responsibilities), so if you are unable to help in that way, please pass along my story and help encourage Cream de la Cream Golden breeders to stop breeding their dogs. If this happened to me, it can happen again and I don’t want to see any other puppy or family go through what me/my family are going through.
