Remmy's Medical and Living Expenses

Remmy Ruiz was in a serious car accident on his way home from work on Friday  afternoon(12/08/2017).  The roof and front end of his car caved in completely. Remmy was rushed to the ER from the scene. Once there, he was sedated and put on a breathing tube. He was moved into the ICU on Saturday (12/09/2017) where he remains in a stable but critical condition. He is still under sedation and his breathing tube still in. Remmy has suffered brain trauma from the accident that will take a quite some time to heal as well as a lot of physical/occupational therapy. 

The road to recovery for Remmy is going to be long and expensive.  His fiancee (Anna) and their child (Leon) require finacial support for Remmy's medical bills, their family's general living expenses, and to buy a working car.

Remmy works for SAAF (the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation) educating people on important health and safety practices regaurding sex and substance use. He is also openly Transgender, a valued member of the LGBTQ community, and a progressive liberal activist. He does his best to make the world a bit better even when he doesn't think it will make much of a difference. 

As one of Remmy's best friends, I'm asking for people to donate what they can.  Thank you <3

Update 12/13/2017:
Remmy still has his breathing tube in, but the ventilator is turned off and he is breathing on his own. He is also still sedated but requiring less sedatives to remain calm.

Update 12/16/2017:
Remmy woke up yesterday!!!
They removed his breathing tube and he is doing well breathing on his own.
He is able to talk some. But his throat is pretty raw from the breathing tube and he's still disoriented, so it is a bit hard to understand everything he's trying to say.
We greatly appreciate all the love that's been pouring out for Remmy from his supportive friends and relatives. <3
I will send out an update as soon as he is able to receive visitors. I'm thinking about making a group guest book/ art piece for visitors and well wishers to contribute to. Let me know if you have any cool ideas for such! And please keep sharing and contributing to the Remmy fund campaign <3 <3 <3

Update 12/16/2017:
Sorry it's been a while since I last updated! This last week has been quite the whirl wind.

Remmy was moved from the ICU step down unit at the hospital to a rehab facility last week. He is improving by leaps and bounds day by day. He is able to walk completely unassisted for short spurts now and is receiving physical, occupational, & speech therapy.

Remmy had an excellent day yesterday (Christmas) thanks to a visit from Anna and their son Leon who had not seen Remmy since the accident. :)

It has been brought to my attention that I have not explained Remmy's condition very well. So with Anna's go-ahead, I'd like to do so now...

When Remmy got into a car accident three weeks ago, he suffered external and internal abrasions as well as some burns. But most notably, his brain suffered from the impact and was injured. He has been diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI). Most of his lesions are in his frontal lobe. The frontal lobe controls:
-emotions
-language
-motor function
-judgement
-behavior
-impulse
-problem solving
-long-term memory
-planning
-reasoning
-language
As such, Remmy has had difficulty with controlling his emotions, behavior, motor functions (especially the force put into his movements), and impulsiveness.
He frequently mixes up his words but rarely seems to notice. His memory doesn't seem to be super badly effected but he does frequently believe he is in his condition for reasons other than a car accident.

The severity of Remmy's symptoms coincide with how tired or stressed he is. For that reason, he is still not having visitors (outside of close family & volunteer caregivers) and we are doing our best to prevent Remmy from having to deal with any additional stressors.

He is healing faster than we expected but we are still a ways away from full recovery.
