Remembering Cara

On January 26th, our family said a sad goodbye to a daughter, daughter-in-law, wife, mother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and dear friend to many.  To keep Cara alive in our hearts and in spirit, we can live by a quote by Rumi, "Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who love with heart and soul there is no such thing as separation."

In the physical world, Cara leaves behind a husband and 2 daughters who are facing a great deal of medical bills from a long, 3-month stay at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

Cara was being treated for Myelodysplasia and Myelofibrosis, basically "cancer" of the bone marrow and a severe deficiency in platelets. She received 3 grueling rounds of aggressive chemo and was in remission. She had a long recovery for her body to start rebuilding her marrow and she was severely neutropenic and had several infections over the course of her treatment, despite all efforts to prevent them. Cara was 3 weeks into remission and waiting for her body to start recovering and we were laying the groundwork for an eventual stem cell transplant to try and cure her for good. At that point, Cara contracted a staph infection that her body was in overdrive to fight. Unfortunatly, none of the anti-biotics they gave her could kill the infection.

After several days of violent rigors and fevers, her body went into septic shock and because she had critically low blood platelets, the alveoli in her lungs hemorrhaged and she couldn't get enough oxygen to her brain as her lungs filled with blood. Despite such a horrific description of what occurred, she passed peacefully and comfortably surrounded by our family. She remained positive and felt loved and cared for up until the minute she lost consciousness and we are grateful for that. We may be suffering, but she is at peace.

Many of you have asked how to help and where to donate. This page has been created to allow Cara's immediate family to find peace with their loss without the burden of mounting medical bills and financial stressors.

Over the years, Cara has donated to numerous causes and more importantly, given her time, love, and cooking to our close community. We appreciate anything that you have to offer to support our family.
