Relief for Puerto Rico & Mexico

We are the Latinx Graduate Association at Notre Dame, and we would like to reach out in solidarity to our families and friends in Mexico and Puerto Rico. During this past week, Mexico has been struck by an intense 7.1 earthquake, and Puerto Rico has endured Hurricane Maria, a Category 4 tropical storm.
We would like to make a call to the Notre Dame community for help and, if possible, beyond our community to the nation as a whole.
Although the initial plan was to buy and ship relief supplies directly, transportation and distribution of these supplies has proven to be very difficult. Help is on hold, and many relief groups are torn between distributing much-needed donations and acquiring real-time needs for responders on the ground. For this reason, we have chosen to donate the money to locally-driven relief efforts in Puerto Rico and in Mexico.
50% of the recollected money is destined to the non-profit organization Casa Mexico USA, supporting already-existing aid infrastructure and targeting cities like Oaxaca, Puebla and Morelos, which are not receiving much of the needed aid being sent to Mexico. Casa Mexico also provides legal and civil support for Mexican migrants living in the United States and Canada. They are also in the process of launching Aid Mexico, where they will keep a transparent process of posting where donations are going. The next 50% is destined to two non-profit organizations driven by local groups in Puerto Rico. All three target different affected populations:
1. Iniciativa Comunitaria is an initiative that has operated since 1990. Its main programs offer aid to the homeless and vulnerable populations. During Hurricane Maria reliefs, IC has activated mobile clinics, seeing more than 70 patients per day. For more information: http://www.iniciativacomunitaria.org/
2. Proyecto Matria is a feminist initiative focused on providing for families that are headed by working-class single mothers in Puerto Rico. This group has already provided water and supplies for more than one hundred families after Hurricane Maria. They are also focusing on providing aid for families in the central and western areas in Puerto Rico, which were some of the most affected areas and have received the less aid from federal and foreign initiatives. In times of crises, we know that good-intentioned funds may be misused and misdirected. For this reason, we will be posting information on the local entities we will support with the donations, and we will post proof of donation after our goals are met.
