Relief for New Dime Store

Donation protected
Please help us get The New Dime Store, 314 W 63rd St, back on their feet.  The decades old New Dime Store is a cherished part of the historic Brookside Shops.  Tuesday, December 22nd they had a small fire start in the front of the store and the damages have forced them to temporary close during their busiest time of the year.  Although the fire wasn’t extensive, the smoke and extinguishers damaged much of the inventory.  Like many small, locally-owned small businesses, the store has struggled during the pandemic and the fire has now closed in-store and on-line sales the week of Christmas.  The New Dime Store, like others, depends on the revenues from the holidays to survive the rest of the winter when shopping and spending drops off significantly (especially this year). The fire also follows a personal tragedy - in October Kim lost her husband and co-owner Kevin.

Generations of families have grown up visiting the New Dime Store and it a special part of visiting Brookside, especially during the holidays.  We are hoping to help Kim get back on her feet quickly and cover upfront costs for mitigation of the damages, insurance deductibles, lost revenues, employee wages, and other expenses she’ll incur.  We have set an initial goal of $5,000 not knowing the total magnitude of the costs.  If you love the New Dime Store the way we do, we hope you’ll make a small donation to help. On behalf of the Southtown Council and Brookside Business Association, thank you in advance for all those that generously choose to help.

On a related note, a special thank you to the Brookside Barber Shop and Brookside Jewelry. They heard the fire alarm and noticed smoke, and jumped into action breaking out a front window and using water and a fire extinguisher to help contain the fire until the Kansas City Fire Department arrived.  We are so gratefully for their quick thinking and bravery which we're confident not only saved The New Dime Store, but likely other businesses on the block.  #grateful #foreverbrookside
