<div>I was born with hydrocephalus, which is a condition wherein cerebrospinal fluid builds up deep within the brain. This excess fluid can place harmful or damaging pressure on brain tissue. There’s no cure for this condition and so, in order to manage it, I’ve had 19 brain surgeries, including three VP (ventriculoperitoneal) shunt revisions/replacements in the last year alone.

<div>In the past, I recovered quickly from these operations; however, in 2020 everything changed. After my surgery that year, I developed hyperacusis, which is an excruciating sensitivity to noise, vertigo, dizziness, tinnitus, nerve pain, cognitive impairments, ongoing migraines and vestibular imbalance. These new symptoms resulted in a loss of independence and long-term disability, which has greatly impaired my quality of life. Since then, I’ve met with a cadre of doctors in my area who have performed tests, procedures, and surgeries with minimal to no change or improvement in my new symptoms.

<div>After years of pain, I now have the opportunity to seek treatment at Johns Hopkins’ Hydrocephalus and Cerebral Fluid Center, the leading institute for the study and management of this condition. My hope is that the experts there will be able to address and reverse some of the more debilitating symptoms that I’ve developed since my surgery in 2020. However, since the institute is in Baltimore, Maryland and will require me to travel across the country, I’m creating this GoFundMe and hoping to raise $20,000 to help cover some of the costs associated with this medical opportunity.

<div>My mom, who is also my caregiver, will manage any funds we receive, which will be used to cover the cost of medical exams, procedures, treatments, travel, and lodging. Those who know me, know how strong I am, but I’m at a point where my strength can only carry me so far and, while difficult to admit, I’m in need of help that is beyond my control and ability. Undergoing even one brain surgery is traumatic, let alone the 19 that I’ve had. Anything you can spare would go a long way in seeking relief from the constant pain I now experience.
