Relief for Corozal Puerto Rico

Donation protected
As part of the Steel City Mission Group , a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, our goal is to raise $5000 for the purchase of water filters, construction supplies, school supplies, and medicine to be hand delivered to families in Corozal, Puerto Rico with the help of our friend and colleague Dr. Diana Ortiz of Westminster College.  ALL money donated to this project will go directly towards the purchase of the supplies (no administrative costs).

As a result of the back-to-back disasters of Hurricans Irma and Maria, Puerto Rico is facing a humanitarian crisis.  Hurricane Maria, the most powerful storm to hit Puerto Rico in nearly a century, devastated the Caribbean island. Five days after the Category 4 storm struck, many on the island were still without adequate food, water, and fuel (CBC News ).  About 1.5 million people—44 percent of the island—are without clean drinking water and are relying on water bottles or unsafe water sources for cleaning, drinking, and cooking.   For many communities, including Corozal, clean drinking water won’t be available until the electricity returns. It’s unclear when power will be fully restored, but some areas may be waiting four to six months.  People without power, or the ability to get to an open grocery store, have been collecting water from open or leaking pipes, but that water is often contaminated (Mother Jones ).

One way to help families access a sustainable source of clean drinking water is with ceramic water filters.  Ceramic water filters remove 99.99% of organic contaminates and last 6-10 years for a family of five (Wine to Water).  Each filter costs $50 to produce in the Dominican Republic.

But it is not just access to clean water that the families in this region need.  Large scale clean-up and repairs are needed in towns and rural communities.  Schools will remain closed for months and need supplies that have been destroyed by the storms and the current conditions of the buildings.

With your help, we can provide support for families of United States citizens in desperate need of life’s basic necessities.
