Relay for Gerry

Donation protected
Gerry loved our club and he was truly loved and respected. He played left corner back throughout the sixties and into the seventies and was part of the team that won the Priest’s, McArdle and Jubilee Cups.

Off the pitch, he made an invaluable contribution to the club. He was a selector for our winning Championship team in 1979 and was always on the look out for new talent for our Men’s and Ladies teams. He rarely missed a home or away match. Gerry was part of our Executive Committee for almost 40 years and held the role of Vice Chairman for many years.

In recent years, you would see Gerry acting as linesman, doing the gate, wearing a high-vis on carpark duty or just stopping by in his car to check that all was in order at the club. He always had a word of encouragement for us. His contribution was recognised when he was appointed Honorary President. We were delighted to make a special presentation to him for his many years of service at our 2018 Annual Awards

To honour his memory Man O War GFC are holding a "Virtual Relay Race" on Sunday 31st May. Money raised is to be donated to MS Ireland and the Alzheimer's Society of Ireland, as requested by Gerry's family.

Starting from 10am, each team will exercise (run/walk/cycle) in a virtual Relay for Gerry. At intervals, a virtual "baton" will be passed on to the next team member. This will continue until 8pm that evening.

How to take part?

1. Set up a team. Get your friends/family together , set up a schedule and get training for the big day.
2. Join a team. Different teams in the club are being set up  so there's definitely a team for you!
3. Still no luck? Contact us and we'll be glad to roster you on a team.

Alzheimer Society Ireland:

Dementia is the name for a range of conditions that cause damage to the brain. This damage can affect memory, thinking, language and the ability to carry out everyday tasks. There are many conditions which cause dementia. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause. ASI provides support to individuals and families managing dementia. They work towards creating change through political campaigning and by raising awareness in the media. They do this by promoting the voice of people with dementia and their carers and by building a body of evidence through research, policy papers and collaborations.
