Relapsing Polychondritis

Donation protected
This page is for my mom. She is a loving wife and friend. She has five children, two son-in-laws and one grandson.  She is the type of person who would drop anything to help someone else.

My mom was diagnosed with Relapsing Polychondritis in October of 2012. Relapsing Polychondritis is a multi-systemic condition characterized by inflammation and deterioration of the soft cartilage in the body. It can damage the ears, nose, ribs, eyes, joints and respiratory tract.

Memorial Day weekend of 2017, mom picked up a virus that led to the inflammation of her trachea and was causing breathing problems. Dad took her to the Chambersburg Hospital and the doctors there realized that she would be better treated at the University of Maryland Hospital. So, she was air lifted to Baltimore in a helicopter. The doctors put in a breathing tube and put her on a dose of antibiotics. After a few days, they decided to remove the breathing tube and put her on forced air. Mom did not respond well. Her oxygen levels dropped and her heart stopped. The doctors were able to administer CPR and bring her back. They placed a smaller breathing tube back in again. They scheduled a tracheotomy for the next day. The surgery took place on June 7 and they were successful in placing the trach.

Mom has been at the University of Maryland for about two weeks now. For most of her stay she was in the ICU but now currently in a different room. She is patiently waiting to come home. Although, that will be in a few days (hopefully) she still has a long road ahead. She will have to sleep with a ventilator and will have to get used to the trach. In the mean time, we are all just taking it day by day, and relying on friends family and our wonderful Lord.

We greatly appreciate the donations but if you are unable to donate, we completely understand. We just ask that you share the page. Relapsing Polychondritis is extremely rare and hopefully, one day, they are able to  gain more knowledge and a better understanding of the condition.

Thank you all for the love, prayers and support!!
