Rehabilitate Manual Scavengers

On 01/01/2018 three manual scavengers died due to suffocation in Bengaluru:
===============================
Manual scavengers are people who clean human feces from dry latrines, sewers and streets. Even though the practice is illegal (the 1993 Act) it still continues in 21st century India. Manual scavenging probably the most dehumanizing and dangerous practice.Across India, there are over 12 lakh manual scavengers. Among them, more than 22,000 deaths are reported each year due to asthma, skin infections and tuberculosis on the job. Unfortunately, major contributor to the continued existence of this crime is the Indian Railways. Many train carriages have toilets dropping the excreta from trains on the tracks; scavengers are employed to clean these tracks manually.

1) "It's not uncommon for scavengers to drink a quick swig of alcohol before starting their job. "They have to numb their senses,"" - Shinde
2) "Even the tea vendor kept two separate glasses – one for his usual customers and one for us" - Vimala
3) "I clean toilets in 20 houses every day. I use a tin plate and broom to remove the excrement that has collected in the toilet, I collect the excrement in a basket, and then I take it and throw it away. This work is so awful I don’t feel like eating." - Manisha, Mainpuri district, Uttar Pradesh, January 2014

Incidentally, I on the occassion of my baby's birthday pledge to eradicate manual scavenging and make us all part of the campaign in giving them back their dignity and equality. I'm working with an NGO "Safai Karmachari Andolan" an organization that's been fighting hard in provding rehabilitation for the oppressed.

Note: For people in India you can directly donate to the NGO. Please reach out to me on Facebook Messenger for details.
