My parents adopted Reggie in Fall 2020 after several years of them adamantly stating that they wouldn’t ever get a dog again. Once they saw his picture, it was love at first sight. So much so, that they attempted to drive to Indiana approximately 24 minutes after finding him on the adoption site…before they had filled out an application or called to make sure he was still available for adoption! They were all but in the car when they realized they probably needed to adjust the excitement level, apply online, and maybe buy a food bowl or two.
From the moment he came home with my parents, Reggie has been the biggest blessing in their lives and the lives of everyone he meets. He is the friendliest, sweetest, mellow-est dog you’ll ever know. He’ll greet you with a literal smile when you walk in the door and melt like a marshmallow the second you pick him up. He is, quite frankly, the perfect dog.
Over this past weekend Reggie started showing signs of something being off. After monitoring him for a few days, it was decided that a vet visit was in order after he refused to eat or drink, was completely lethargic, and began dry heaving. The vet confirmed that Reggie has a diaphragmatic hernia, which could either mean he was born with a congenital defect or he suffered some sort of trauma prior to coming to live at the Korte house. Either way, it means that there is a hole in his diaphragm and it has gotten large enough that his intestines and other organs have begun moving through the hole and into his chest cavity. Emergency surgery is the only option, and even then it’s a complicated and expensive surgery with significant risks.
My parents were obviously not anticipating this costly surgery and will probably be less than thrilled that I am putting this out there. But Reggie is family. He’s been a friend to everyone he’s ever met and has even turned a few non-dog lovers into adoring fans. The only thing I want my parents worried about is bringing home a healthy, smiling bubbers. Anything raised here will go directly to the cost of the surgery.
If Reggie has ever brought a smile to your face, I’d ask that you consider helping out.
Thanks to all!
