Reese goes to National Leadership Conference Fund

My name is Reese Whittington, I’m a junior at Republic High School in Nashville, TN and I love gaming! I also have Asperger’s syndrome. As someone with Aspergers, I have spent my life trying to learn to socialize in a way that comes natural to most. I would even say that it is easier for me to communicate using technology than it is interacting with my peers and loved ones in a traditional sense.

I love gaming so much that it is mostly how I spend time with my friends and family. Honestly, I find it difficult to go out and try new things. That's why I'm really excited to be given this cool opportunity that combines learning more about what I love and stepping outside my comfort zone.

We are creating this GoFundMe because I have been invited to represent my high school at the 2020 National Student Leadership Conference being held this summer on The University of Washington’s campus. This program selects outstanding high school students from around the world to participate based on academic excellence and leadership potential. Besides making Principals List this year, I am also a member of the Dungeons and Dragons Club and scored a 25 on my pre ACT with the highest reading score in my entire grade.

I would be attending the conference for game design. Designing and testing video games is literally my dream. NSLC could change the course of my entire life. This opportunity is a chance for me to test my skills out in the real world and more importantly at college. I do believe if I want to thrive in this world as an adult, this is my path. I’m hoping to make some true friends with aspirations similar to mine. A group of like minds who can support each other while in college and after graduation.

Having Asperger’s has made it harder for me to mature socially, but that hasn’t stopped me from living a normal life. However, I am a person who has been sheltered from the world. This would be the first time I will travel and be on my own. Which I am personally ready to do! Not to mention how great attending the NSLC will look on my college resume.

Unfortunately, my family cannot afford the entire amount.  Therefore, I am requesting assistance from you! Any contribution to this GoFundMe will go directly to the tuition of the program.

Thanks for reading this! And thanks for helping me make my dreams come true.

Reese

The cost for me to attend the conference is $3,700. That includes the program, room and board, course materials, program activities, travel to the conference. So far I have raised $700 and I hope to raise the rest through this Gofundme, with a deadline of December 26th.

"NSLC is a truly unique experience. No matter which program you attend, you will gain essential leadership skills while learning about group dynamics, team building, goal setting, communication and conflict resolution. Additionally, you will gain a true insider’s perspective into a future career. College admission officers find participation in the NSLC and earning college credit while in high school of interest when evaluating applications. The NSLC experience is one that our students say they will “remember forever.”
