Reelect J.David Cox President AFGE

Brother and Sisters,

I am writing today to ask for your support for my re-election as your National President of AFGE.  Serving this wonderful union is the greatest honor and blessing I could ever have imagined.  And every day I wake up full of energy and enthusiasm for doing the very best job that I can for all federal and DC government employees.  I love this union with all my heart, and I love each and every one of its members.  Nothing in this world is more important to me than fighting every day for better job security, better pay and benefits, better contracts and workplaces free from discrimination, harassment, or unfairness of any kind.

That’s who I am, that’s what I’ve committed my life to, and that’s what I ask you to allow me to keep on doing.  I don’t like to brag, but I think I’m pretty good at this job!  Since I’ve held national office, first as National Secretary-Treasurer and then as National President, this union has grown by more than 100,000 members.  And that growth has translated into more strength to win the many battles we face in Congress, at the bargaining table, and at the worksite.  We’re a bigger, stronger, and more effective union than we were in 2006, and I know that we can continue to grow strength and effectiveness.

Having a plan and the ability to execute has never been more important for our union.  You know as well as I do that we have powerful enemies who want to either weaken or eliminate us.  They want to take away civil service protections, collective bargaining rights, our pay system, our pensions, and as of now, our ability to have health insurance in retirement.  They want to freeze our pay and they want to contract out and privatize our jobs or, in DoD, turn us all into term employees with no more than 4 or 5 years of job security at a time.

I think of it as a David and Goliath battle and AFGE is David because even though we are potentially more than 700,000 strong, we’re up against billionaires who use their vast resources to control not just politicians of both parties, but also much of the media, think tanks, universities and anything else that determines public opinion and what politicians will talk about.  We’ve got right on our side, but they’ve got more money than we’ll ever have so we have to be smart and Out-work them, Out-Organize them, and Out-smart them in every way we can.

That’s what I do as your National President and that’s what I ask you to let me continue doing.  Y’all know I try to jam 25 hours into each day, and I do that not just because it’s necessary, but because I love it.

In addition to the constant work of representation and organizing, the moment of history we find ourselves in makes the work of AFGE absolutely crucial to American democracy.  The institutions of government are the foundation of our democracy, and so are our rights to form and join a union and bargain collectively.  So many things we have taken for granted are suddenly up for grabs – and so much of what we thought was common ground has ripped apart with racism, suspicion of minority religions, challenges to voting rights, and so much more.  AFGE needs to be part of repairing that common ground.

The old AFGE insignia says “To do for all that which none can do for oneself.”  Those may be old fashioned words, but that is what I promise to do every day as AFGE National President, and what I promise to make sure you’re allowed to do too.

I ask for your Support and Vote for Re-election August 2018.
