Who are we?

Malawi’s Parliamentary Women’s Caucus is composed of the 32 elected female members of Malawi’s National Assembly.

What do we do?

The Parliamentary Women’s Caucus engages in activities that;

                     i.            Promote the gender agenda and gender equity in Malawi, through the facilitation of policy and legislative interventions on issues affecting women in the social, cultural, economic and political arena;

                   ii.            Facilitate the effective implementation of the national gender policy;

                 iii.            Promote gender equality and equity at all levels of human development;

                 iv.            Develop and establish norms and standards that promote the effective participation of women in Parliament;

                   v.            Sensitize all Parliamentarians on the principles, policies and regulatory frameworks governing gender equality and equity in order to facilitate their effective representative, legislative and oversight functions;

Our challenge

In Malawi, women are often observed within the confines of cultural gender norms, which tend to enforce their marginalization from key decision-making and leadership positions.  Patriarchy and the absence of gender quotas in party structures, among many other factors, also contribute to the low representation of women in parliament. Furthermore, Malawian women usually have comparatively limited access to income-generating activities, and have low financial capital. This ultimately compromises campaigning efforts, putting women at a competitive disadvantage to their male counterparts.

How will the funds raised be used?

In light of the upcoming 2019 Election in Malawi, members of the Parliamentary Women’s Caucus require financial assistance towards the development and printing of campaign visibility tools to support their campaigning efforts  and highlight the importance of women’s political participation in Malawi. These campaign visibility tools will then be distributed by members of the Parliamentary Women’s Caucus in their constituencies.
