Reed Plesko's Emergency Craniotomy

Spende geschützt
In late July, Reed started experiencing a series of headaches which came on suddenly and became increasingly more painful.  After a few days of this happening and no relief was felt from Advil or other medicines, Reed went to the emergency room.  At the emergency room, the doctors quickly saw him and passed it off a migraine headache.  He was quickly treated with a cocktail of drugs and released.  Mind you, the ER doctor never came from across the room to examine Reed at all, let alone to the basic sinus, ear, and other checks most physicians do to ascertain the state of a patient.  After returning home, Reed's condition continued to deteriorate.  His left eye and forehead began to swell.  It was thought originally that the swelling was a result of an allergic reaction to the 'cocktail' of drugs he was given.  He was given Benadryl and more analgesics to help with his situation.  It did not help.  By the next day, Reed's left eye had swollen shut and the right side of his face started swelling.  The original ER was of no help.  Reed was quickly brought to Houston where he was then taken to an urgent care facility.  Upon being admitted, the doctor on call gasped and stated that he had a good idea just from looking at him what the issue was, but would reserve stating until tests were confirmed.  Unfortunately, the worst was confirmed.  Reed had an acute sinus infection which had eroded not only through the front of his sinus cavity, but also through the back and he now had puss pockets between his skull and the lining of his brain.  He needed immediate surgery to save his life.  The urgent care facility rushed an ambulance to take him to Memorial Hermann Children's Hospital where he was rushed into surgery to relieve the pressure on his brain and ultimately save his life.  Additional surgeries would of course come in the following days, but this one had to happen immediately to stop any brain damage and ultimately save his life.  Most of the doctors were so kind to point out that this type of situation frequently can go undiagnosed until the swelling begins without an early thorough examination.  Either way, it happened, but after multiple surgeries and nearly two weeks in the hospital, Reed was finally able to come home.  The condition required him to have six additional weeks of IV antibiotics.  This unfortunately ruined Reed's dreams of starting his Freshman year of High School that he had been dreaming of for quite some time.  This was devastating, but not nearly as bad as finding out that the IV injections he was receiving in the hospital because he is allergic to Penicillin were over $3800 each time, which he was receiving four times daily.   To compound the entire problem, Reed’s father had been laid off from his job earlier in the year and the cost of Cobra was more than they could afford.  A private insurance company was chosen which seemed to have an excellent set of benefits, but unfortunately was not true.  To this day, the insurance company has refused to pay on his behalf and only negotiated the rates to a lower amount, leaving his family to pay the exorbitant bill.  Please help to give the family some support and keep them from financial destitute.
