We over at r/comiccon are raising funds to help with the cost of hosting this year's [unofficial] Reddit - San Diego Comic Con party. This is an entirely volunteer-run event with no financial sponsorship. In the past few years our small meetup has evolved into a massive festive gathering. We want to make this as fun as possible for everyone involved, but it has grown so big and done it so quickly that financing the event ourselves (2 people: Jessika/freakishkittie and Uri/ironicprocesstheory) has become untenable. We have a handful of volunteers that have joined us, again of their own volition, volunteers to whom we owe enormous thanks, but it's difficult asking any one person to provide swag for 300+ attendees!
The money will be used to finance purchase Reddit swag (ie button pins, lanyards, stickers, tshirts, etc.), party signage, prizes for trivia winners, and decorations.
We need the money as soon as possible to get things ordered. It takes time to get quotes and mock-ups for custom items, adding on production and shipping time, suddenly it's time to drive down to San Diego! We are currently in the process of getting quotes for Reddit branded swag. Once we get those quotes, we'll be buying items as the budget allows.
Every penny will be used to make the party as awesome as we can! We are not in this to make a profit.
If there is anything left over that we weren't able to use for the party, we'll buy some Reddit gold to give out to random attendees.
We get it, it's a difficult thing to part with your hard earned money! At the same time, it's difficult asking for money. But we come to you hat in hand because it's necessary. Other donations (items given away as prizes, swag provided) or time volunteered (setting up, swag bag organization, etc.) are also greatly appreciated.
