<div>Wij zijn Monique en Violet, moeder en dochter uit Nederland. In juni van dit jaar maakten we samen een reis die ons diep heeft geraakt.

<div>We bezochten onze dierbare vrienden Marianne en Remco, die in 2015 hun leven in Nederland achter zich lieten om zich volledig te wijden aan natuurbescherming in Zambia.

<div>Remco werkte achttien jaar bij de politie in de Amsterdamse Bijlmermeer, onder andere als projectleider, officier van dienst en hulpofficier van justitie. Marianne had een succesvolle carrière in de financiële wereld, en werkte voor hun vertrek bij de Rabobank.

<div>Na een eerste reis naar Zuid-Afrika in 2005 werden ze verliefd op Afrika: de mensen, de natuur, en het wilde leven. In de jaren daarna keerden ze elk jaar terug, tot ze beseften dat ze niet alleen toerist wilden zijn, maar écht iets wilden bijdragen.

<div>In 2014 besloten ze alles achter te laten. Ze verkochten hun huis, namen afscheid van hun familie, vrienden en goedbetaalde banen, verkochten een deel van hun bezittingen en gaven het grootste deel weg. In februari 2015 stapten ze op het vliegtuig naar Zambia, met niet meer dan twee koffers en twee rugzakken.

<div>De eerste twee jaar woonden ze als vrijwilligers zonder inkomen in een tent, midden in de bush. In 2016 was Remco een van de medeoprichters van Wildlife Crime Prevention (WCP Zambia), een organisatie die inmiddels een sleutelrol speelt in natuurbescherming in Zambia, en waar hij nog altijd met hart en ziel voor werkt. Marianne zette onder WCP het eerste rehabilitatieprogramma voor pangolins op, een unieke en ernstig bedreigde diersoort.

<div>Hun werk is diep verweven met de bescherming van natuurgebieden en wilde dieren in heel Zambia. En het was dankzij hen dat wij de kans kregen om met eigen ogen te zien wat er allemaal nodig is om die natuur te beschermen.
</div>

<div>Tijdens onze reis namen Marianne en Remco ons mee naar Livingstone, waar we de adembenemende Victoriawatervallen bezochten, een van de zeven natuurwonderen van de wereld. In hetzelfde gebied ligt ook het prachtige Mosi oa Tunya National Park: een uniek natuurreservaat waar savanne, rivier, en bos elkaar afwisselen. Het is het enige park in Zambia waar je witte neushoorns kunt zien.

<div>In dit park maakten we kennis met een bijzonder team: de Rhino Protection Unit van het Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW). Deze rangers beschermen dag en nacht de kleine populatie witte neushoorns die nog in Mosi oa Tunya leeft. Ze doen dat 24 uur per dag, 7 dagen per week, te voet, ongeacht de hitte, regen of het gevaar. Want de dreiging van stroperij is reëel en constant.

<div>Het werk dat zij doen is indrukwekkend, maar ook zwaar en risicovol. Daarom worden zij ondersteund door WCP Zambia, niet alleen financieel, maar ook met middelen zoals voertuigen, brandstof en voedselrantsoenen. Zonder deze hulp zou hun werk niet mogelijk zijn.

<div>Na de kennismaking met het team gingen we lopend met de rangers de bush in. Onder hun begeleiding mochten we enkele witte neushoorns van dichtbij aanschouwen. Het was midden op de dag, en de dieren lagen rustig te slapen in de schaduw van een paar bomen.

<div>Dat moment was magisch, en ook emotioneel. Niet alleen omdat het zo bijzonder is om deze imposante dieren van zo dichtbij te zien, maar ook omdat we voor het eerst met eigen ogen het resultaat zagen van jarenlange bescherming. Remco vroeg aan de rangers of “baby Jack” er ook bij was, een neushoorntje dat vernoemd is naar zijn collega Jack toen hij werd geboren. Tot onze verrassing wees een van de rangers hem direct aan: hij is inmiddels uitgegroeid tot een volwassen neushoorn. Voor mij, Violet, was dit een ontroerend moment, het besef dat deze jonge neushoorn de kans heeft gehad om op te groeien, dankzij de onophoudelijke inzet van het Rhino Protection Team. Monique werd juist geraakt door de kwetsbaarheid van het geheel: het idee dat zulke vreedzame dieren, ondanks alle inspanningen, nog steeds gevaar lopen om te worden gestroopt voor alleen hun hoorn. Het contrast tussen hoop en dreiging, tussen leven en verlies, liet bij ons allebei een diepe indruk achter.

<div>Wat ons die dag duidelijk werd: zonder de dagelijkse inzet van dit team, en zonder de steun van organisaties zoals WCP Zambia, zouden deze neushoorns er waarschijnlijk niet meer zijn.
</div>
<div>Voor non-profitorganisaties zoals WCP Zambia is het elk jaar weer een uitdaging om voldoende middelen te vinden om al hun beschermingsprojecten draaiende te houden. Zeker in het huidige politieke klimaat, waarin de beschikbare fondsen wereldwijd onder druk staan, wordt het steeds moeilijker om budgetten rond te krijgen.

<div>Daarom starten wij deze campagne. Wij willen namens WCP Zambia geld inzamelen voor de bescherming van het Mosi oa Tunya National Park en zijn witte neushoorns.
</div>
<div>Ons doel is om €100.000 op te halen. Met dit bedrag kan WCP Zambia:
</div>
<ul>
<li>de Rhino Protection Unit blijven ondersteunen met brandstof, voertuigen en rantsoenen;
</li>
<li>andere urgente natuurbeschermingsprojecten in Zambia blijven uitvoeren;
</li>
<li>bijdragen aan het voortbestaan van een uniek stukje Afrikaanse wildernis.

<div>We are Monique and Violet, a mother and daughter from the Netherlands. In June this year, we took a journey that deeply moved us.
</div>

<div>We visited our dear friends Marianne and Remco, who left their lives in the Netherlands in 2015 to fully dedicate themselves to nature conservation in Zambia.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Remco worked for eighteen years with the police in Amsterdam’s Bijlmermeer district, serving as a project leader, duty officer, and assistant public prosecutor. Marianne had a successful career in the financial sector and worked at Rabobank before their departure.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>After a first trip to South Africa in 2005, they fell in love with Africa: its people, its landscapes, and its wildlife. Over the next ten years, they returned every year, until they realised they didn’t just want to be tourists but truly wanted to contribute.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In 2014, they decided to leave everything behind. They sold their house, said goodbye to their families, friend and well-paying jobs, sold some of their belongings and gave most of them away. In February 2015, they boarded a plane to Zambia, with nothing more than two suitcases and two backpacks.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>For the first two years, they lived in a tent in the bush as volunteers without any income. In 2016, Remco became one of the co-founders of Wildlife Crime Prevention (WCP Zambia), an organisation that now plays a key role in conservation efforts across Zambia and where he continues to work with great dedication. Under WCP, Marianne established Zambia’s very first rehabilitation programme for pangolins, a unique and highly endangered species.

<div>Their work is deeply intertwined with the protection of wildlife and natural areas throughout Zambia. And it was thanks to them that we had the chance to witness, with our own eyes, what it truly takes to protect this wilderness.
</div>

</div>
<div>During our journey, Marianne and Remco took us to Livingstone, where we visited the breathtaking Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Nearby lies the stunning Mosi oa Tunya National Park, a unique reserve where savannah, river, and forest come together. It is the only park in Zambia where you can still see white rhinos.

<div>While visiting the park, we met a very special team: the Rhino Protection Unit of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW). These rangers protect the park’s small population of white rhinos around the clock, on foot, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, rain or shine. The threat of poaching is real and constant.
</div>

</div>
<div>The work they do is impressive, but also tough and risky. That’s why they are supported by WCP Zambia, not only financially, but also with essential resources such as vehicles, fuel, and food rations. Without this support, their work would not be possible.
</div>
<div>After meeting the team, we went into the bush on foot with the rangers and were fortunate enough to see several white rhinos up close. It was midday, and the animals were peacefully sleeping in the shade of a few trees.
</div>

<div>That moment was magical and emotional. Not only because it is so special to witness these magnificent animals from so close by, but also because, for the first time, we saw the tangible results of years of protection. Remco asked the rangers if “baby Jack” was among the group, a young rhino named after his colleague Jack when it was born. To our surprise, one of the rangers pointed him out immediately: he has since grown into a fully mature white rhino. For me, Violet, it was a deeply touching moment, realising that this young rhino had been given the chance to grow up, thanks to the tireless work of the Rhino Protection Team. Monique, on the other hand, was moved by the fragility of it all: the idea that such peaceful creatures, despite all efforts, are still at risk of being killed for nothing but their horn. The contrast between hope and threat, between life and loss, left a lasting impression on both of us.

<div>What became clear to us that day is this: without the daily commitment of this team, and without the support of organisations like WCP Zambia, these rhinos would likely no longer exist.
</div>
<div>For non-profit organisations like WCP Zambia, finding enough funding each year to keep all their protection projects running is a constant challenge. Especially in the current political climate, with global funding under pressure, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to make ends meet.
</div>

<div>That’s why we’re launching this campaign. We want to raise funds on behalf of WCP Zambia for the protection of Mosi oa Tunya National Park and its white rhinos.
</div>
<div>Our goal is to raise €100,000. With this amount, WCP Zambia will be able to:
</div>
<ul>
<li>continue supporting the Rhino Protection Unit with fuel, vehicles, and food rations;
</li>
<li>carry out other urgent wildlife conservation projects in Zambia;
</li>
<li>contribute to the survival of a unique piece of African wilderness.
