Recycled Solar Smart Bags
Hi, My name is Jamila Mayanja founder and team lead of Smart Girls Uganda a social enterprise that empowers young people mostly girls to live a health and sustainable lifestyle.
Our recycled solar smart bag is Comprehensive menstrual hygiene kit/back packer with educational programming designed with and for girls in Uganda. The bag is distributed with a pack of reusable pads, MHM Booklet, Pads sowing kit and with an incorporation of a solar panel charging a light bulb, the bag's insides are made out of recycled plastic waste to make it water proof.
We innovated this bag for 29.7% of the adolescent girls that miss school 4 to 8 days per cycle in Uganda and South Africa. Another 24.3% of the girls are being stigmatized whenever they soil their uniforms and as a result, they opt to stay at home until after their period. NGOs have provided them with reusable pads but they still prefer to use them from home because they don't have the convenience and privacy to use or clean them when at school.

Its a simple product that gives a 360 solution to menstrual hygiene and easy access to power for the girls.
Achieves the goal to absolutely keep a girl in school during her menses because its a huge compliment to already exciting Menstrual health management solutions. We care about the environment by recycling plastic waste in the bags. The bags are also being used by school going boys for access to power at night to read their books and helping there sisters with access to MHM products.
Schools have been re- opened in Uganda after 2 years of being closed but most girls and some boys are still out of school because they lack this basic necessities we hope we can get them back in school by 2nd term, The funds asked will help us make 500 Smart bags that will go in keeping 500 girls in school in Kasese and Bundibujo Uganda. They will also help in creating jobs for 20 young women who are survivors of Gender based Violence from the slum areas of Bwaise, who we train and hire to make these bags.
