Recovering From Hate Crime
Hey there, my name is Chris. I recently relocated out of Portland, OR, to Olympia, Washington, after surviving the trauma of a gunshot while walking home from work. I felt I had to leave Portland for my safety but since moving to Olympia, I have been further subject to an escalating pattern of targeted harassment - simply for being a Black Man. I am an on-call social worker, who works with houseless individuals at a shelter, but just yesterday I was pulled over, handcuffed, and detained, right outside of my workplace, by four cops and and one riot cop, in two separate cop cars, because I "fit the description," due to my dreads. They even made me take off my do-rag and I now no longer even feel comfortable having my dreads out. There have also been multiple other situations in the Pacific Northwest where the police, white supremacists, and white nationalists have followed me for several miles. Not to mention that I have even recently experienced racist roommates changing the locks on me.
The latest target was my vehicle-- my car was sabotaged earlier this week with a solid object placed in the gas tank. After moving the car behind my house, my car was, then, purposely destroyed. All 5 of my tires were slashed, including the spare tire, the wiring pulled, and my headlights bashed in. This pattern of racist attacks, hate crimes, and harassment is wearing down immensely on my well-being. I am now put in a extremely difficult situation with rent, damage costs, etc. After talking to the car shop, they claimed the car would be a total loss due to the engine and tires now being bad and lights being gone. This is extremely disappointing especially because I try very hard to take care of the little that I do have. I was just working on my car the other day and I only took it camping once.
I am asking for help and support, in hopes to repair my truck and also find stability/safety. I am trying to make things work for myself, become better than these situations, and rise above. Any support is welcome, thank you friends!
