Rebuilding Minority-Owned Small Businesses

Across the country, minority-owned small businesses contribute so much to their local communities. These businesses add so much value to the neighborhoods they’re a part of. Many minority-owned small businesses in Minneapolis and Boston have been damaged over the last few weeks, and I hope that you will join me in raising money to help them rebuild.
My name is Natalia, and I live in Massachusetts. I call Boston my second home. My father immigrated to MA from Chile, and my mom’s family immigrated from the Dominican Republic. Both of my parents grew up in very rural areas, and they came to America knowing they wanted a better life for their future family.
Growing up, I watched my parents pour their blood, sweat, and tears into their small real estate business. While my parents work their endless hours, my Abuela has helped raise me and my brothers. To help keep her safe throughout this pandemic, our family has kept very strict social distance guidelines to prevent exposing her to COVID-19.
On the day of May 31st, I was unable to attend the protest held in Boston due to my family’s social distancing. I was devastated when I couldn’t march to support the black community, and so I quickly thought of different ways in which I could make a change.
Coming from a family with a minority-owned small business, watching the aftermath that the protests left on these businesses nearly brought me to tears. I immediately decided to create a fundraiser to help clean up and rebuild the minority-owned businesses in Minneapolis. Then, after seeing the damage that occurred in my own city of Boston, I decided I wanted to help my second home as well.
Right now, businesses are left coming up with the money to pay for the things they did not destroy. Some businesses can barely stay afloat as it is due to COVID-19, and with these additional expenses, many storefronts could be forced to shut down.
The proceeds from this fundraiser are being split between minority-owned small businesses in Minneapolis and Boston. I believe that this is a great opportunity for people of our country, whether they are in support of the protests or against them, to come together as a society and help restore these small businesses.
I am continuing to look for more ways in which I can make a positive impact in my community and also honor the deaths of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and the countless other victims of racism and oppression. In the meantime, I hope you will join me by donating to this fundraiser to support our beloved small businesses in Boston and Minneapolis.
