Rebuilding The Fijian Community

Donation protected
Hello! My name is Trisha and I'm a first year undergraduate student, studying Architecture. My aspiration to create a mark in the world led me to be involved in this project, offering me the chance to make a tangible difference for an underprivileged community through building and teaching. I hope to make this opportunity successful, which is why I need your help...

The Backstory

2016 saw the most devastating cyclone in recent history hit the islands of Fiji, destroying homes, schools, crops and much more. As well as this, the village must be moved and re-constructed to also avoid future floods. CAUKIN organisation and I, will be going to Savundrodro village in Fiji this summer and in the course of this month, our aim is to build and design a community hall for those affected by climate change.

The premise of our design group is to use creativity to drive and inspire community design. We will use the local vernacular combined with the latest natural disaster design guidance, to design a community hall, which is contemporary, practical and robust enough to be able to withstand future natural disasters.

The outcome of this project will increase the confidence of their safety, rebuild the community and enhance their quality of living. The space will be utulised for villagers to congregate at the heart of the community, while also enabling a place for the children to learn and play. This will also allow the opportunity for the children to participate in community activities.

This eye-opening and selfless opportunity allows me to be a part of something bigger than myself. By being 'adopted' by a Fijian family for a month, I am able immerse myself in their culture and way of life, but to also understand their struggles in order to appreciate the real importance of life - family and community. I am passionate to give back and I find fulfillment by impacting remote communities hoping to change lives.

I understand that this goal that I am aiming for may seem like a large amount, but with the help of many small contributions, it will go a long way to immensely change the lives of the Fijian community. I am grateful for any donation - it is much appreciated and greatly valued.

Thank you for reading, I hope my story inspires you to also create a mark in the world. If a donation is what you cannot provide, please share with your friends and family.

We cannot change the world but with your help we can certainly make a lot of change to these people's lives. It all starts with one person, you.
