The rebuilding of Ivan Dawson Primary School at BVI.
I need your help with funding the voluntary work.
Together with All Hands and Heart I am helping with the rebuilding of the British Virgin Islands. The mission is to rebuild one of the damaged schools on the Tortola island with a population of about 25,000. The Ivan Dawson Primary School was badly damaged by the hurricanes, and it is still a disaster area that needs our help.
My mission is to spend 6 months helping to rebuild and assist with the process.
The time frame of fundraising is urgent, due the short time frame for me to be at sight at BVI, the fundraising continues during the mission.
A brief summary of me; 49 years of age, dad of 3 amazing kids. I have spent the last 25 years working in the construction business during different fields, with several projects around the globe, I have also been based in the Caribbean for many years. Experience from disaster areas; Operation Desert Storm (Gulf War 1990) and UN mission in Lebanon 1992.
I am currently living in the south of Sweden, Europe. But have a strong need for helping in affected areas. There are many ways to help people in need and this is my way of helping. By giving my time and experience where it’s most needed. If I can help the coming generation to get an education and to be safe, I give six month of my time for free.
The islands that are damaged needs our help to get back on their feet. But most importantly the kids need a safe place to heal again after the disaster.
If you are able to make a donation for my mission it would be greatly appreciated.
The amount needed is about 7000 USD and goes to the following;
Airline tickets: 3000 USD (SWE-DK-UK-USA-BVI-TT, it’s a complicated tripp)
Equipment: 1000 USD (working tools, protection clothes etc)
Food: 1000 USD (non working days and extras)
Extra costs during the mission: 2000 USD (330 USD / month, internet, medication, insurence, leave, etc )
Surplus of the funding will be donated to All Hands and Hearts. The funding is reported when the mission is completed; so you know what the donations was used for.
All contributions are valuable, every dollar counts!
I will be keeping a blog and making a documentary about the ongoing process. Donors will mentioned in posts and events. But the most importantly is that you make a difference for the kids on the island.
All Hands and Hearts does not charge a fee for volunteering. Volunteers are responsible for funding their travel to and from the program. Once at the program they provide accommodation and 3 meals a day – on all work days. Note that volunteers are financially responsible for themselves - volunteers must be able to fund their own breaks from the program (3 nights off base after 30 days with us), meals on days off and any extras.
All Hands and Hearts is currently the only organization on Tortola helping with clean up. We are currently working with schools and daycares to help the kids on Tortola get back into their normal routine.
HURRICANES IRMA AND MARIA
On September 6, 2017, Category 5 Hurricane Irma – one of the strongest on record to hit the Caribbean – made landfall in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) leaving catastrophic damage in its wake. Irma produced winds upwards of 185mph and severe storm surge. Almost two weeks later, on September 19, Category 4 Hurricane Maria made landfall on Tortola, BVI. Maria produced winds upwards of 155mph, causing widespread flash flooding as deep as 2 feet in some areas, and dangerous mudslides. Both storms affected 100% of the approximate 30,000 residents of the British Virgin Islands – a British overseas territory comprised of 4 main islands; Tortola, Jost van Dyke, Anegada and Virgin Gorda – including the 25,000 individuals who call Tortola home.
The British Virgin Islands Program is based in Nanny Cay, a marina located on a cay directly off of the main island. The current conditions are typical of any area affected by a major natural disaster. The island is still experiencing some shortages in some essential items and services including telecommunications, transportation and electricity. In the five months since the hurricane, a lot has been cleared and most roads are fixed or being fixed, but most buildings have not been repaired and there is still a lot of debris to be cleared.. The hospital on the island is fully functional.

ALL HANDS AND HEARTS
David Campbell heard about the devastating 2004 tsunami and jumped on a plane to offer his extensive expertise gained as a former CEO of BBN Technologies, ultimately stating All Hands Volunteers in 2005. Since then the team has grown to 100 disaster experienced staff and is augmented by the hundreds of volunteers engaged daily.
After surviving the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, Petra Nemcova founded Happy Hearts Fund in an effort to rebuild safe, resilient schools in disaster stricken areas. Since 2005, 171 schools have been rebuilt in 10 countries around the globe. This partnership model yielded greater results because it provides not just a first response.
