As most people in Friday Harbor and San Juan Island know, there was a 4-alarm, major fire located in downtown Friday Harbor on Thursday, April 7th, 2022. The fire is rumored to have started behind the buildings. We lost Herbs Tavern, Crows Nest Coffee, Windemere real estate, and Crystal Kayak. What is not so widely known is other businesses were also majorly impacted. One is the Anchors Away SkyBar. While the front of the building faces First Street, the back of the building was right up against the fire. As you can see in the picture, the back end of the building was burned, and firefighters needed to knock things down to look for fire.
Anchors Away SkyBar is a young local business, having started in July of 2021. The SkyBar has also been closed for months due to the weather and slow season. It was about to reopen for Spring and Summer when the fire happened. Bottles of wine have been broken, and others scorched, rendering them undrinkable. The wine was stored, naturally, in the back of the building.
As a new fledgling business, the owner had the lowest amount of fire insurance, as you do when building a business. Only a fraction of the loss will be covered. All the wine stock is gone. While the owner will repair the building, it is unclear when the Sky Bar can be back open for business. Economic challenge on top of economic challenge.
The owner of the SkyBar is the intrepid Bex Bishop. Please help her rebuild her business. If you have enjoyed a great chat, the stellar views, and the perfect pour of spectacular wine, please support the SkyBar reopen. For the LOVE of WINE! Thank you!
