Rebecca's Chemotherapy and Recovery from GTN

Donation protected
Becca and I have been best friends since 5th grade. Two years ago I gave a speech at her wedding. One year ago she and her husband Josh bought their first home together. This year they started trying for a baby. Becca sent me the photo of the positive pregnancy test. We were so excited! She wanted to wait until 12 weeks before announcing her big news to everyone. She sent me photos of her growing baby bump and talked about how her baby and my future baby would be best friends just like us.

But then a couple weeks ago Becca went in for a 9 week ultrasound and was given some heartbreaking news. There was no heartbeat. Becca had a rare condition called a complete molar pregnancy. A tumor was growing on the placenta. She was not going to have a baby and she needed to have an immediate Dilation and Curettage.

Becca's surgery went well and while she was physically and emotionally drained it seemed she was going to make it through. She would need to be monitored for several months before she could try for another baby. Unfortunately at her next check up her hCG levels had not gone down but had gone up!

The next few days were a frightening series of hospital visits, specialist consultations and medical scans. The abnormal cells had spread. Becca was diagnosed with Gestational Trophoblastic Neoplasia (GTN) and has been prescribed a rigorous course of chemotherapy to kill the tumors. She must remain on this treatment course until her hCG levels go to 0. As they have skyrocketed even in the week since her surgery it is unclear how long that will take.

Becca's prognosis is good. These tumors usually respond really well to chemotherapy. She will feel sick and tired. Her hair will thin and she will be more susceptible to germs during this time. Becca just needs to take it easy and focus on getting better.

This is the part where I am asking you to please join me in helping Becca and Josh during the difficult time. The out of pocket medical expenses along with the hotel stays for out of town specialist visits and some time off work is going to put a great financial strain on them both.

After getting married and purchasing their first home this financial burden is more than they are able to take on.  The heartbreak of losing the baby they thought they were going  have combined with the distress of her current diagnoses is more than any couple should have to bear. Please help me to ease some of this stress so that they don't also have to worry so much about money during this time.  Every little bit all adds up.
