Rebecca Zapen's Breast Cancer Fund

On February 4, 2020, Rebecca Zapen Douglass was diagnosed with breast cancer — invasive ductal carcinoma. She and her husband are full time professional musicians and educators, raising their two young children. The family greatly counts on Rebecca’s income. Over the course of the next year Rebecca faces a loss of two months income during recovery time for her first big surgery, a mastectomy, and then subsequent surgeries to complete reconstruction. It will be known only after the surgery if additional treatment such as chemotherapy will be required.

Rebecca’s musical gifts have touched the communities of Jacksonville FL, Tampa Bay, and beyond, in her work as a violinist, singer, songwriter, and educator. 

She and her family could use your support. Some examples of expenses:

Childcare during Rebecca’s recovery: $600 overall, estimated

~~A personal note from Rebecca:

I had the photo above taken by a dear friend the day before I had my two biopsy procedures. I realized there was a chance all could be found benign, but also a chance that it could be bad news. I felt sad that I could be saying goodbye to a part(s) of my body, facing cancer. The diagnosis hit us like a ton of bricks, with trembling and tears; I was far too young and healthy to be going through this, surely this couldn’t be real. I went through all kinds of emotions/actions: first stoic, purposeful, and productive; then feelings of such gratitude and love as I connected with survivors telling me their diagnoses and stories, and realizing there’s no time like the present to love the people in your life, to be grateful to be alive; and later, sadness. Most recently I’m making sure to focus on balance and health, to practice gratitude, meditation, and do self-care to be as even-keeled as possible. As the time neared that I would finally go public with my health status and share my gofundme campaign, big things were coming to a head world-wide with the covid-19 pandemic. I realize that times are difficult and uncertain. For those who are able to help us financially, related to my cancer and treatment, we are eternally grateful. Hello friend, family, and fans, I'm the organizer of this campaign for sweet Rebecca. I have the honor of calling her my best friend. Throught the years from first meeting at ArtBar in Jacksonville, FL, to tours, marriage, babies, moving, and more we've been through it all together. With this sudden cancer news I felt so distraught being so far away from my friend. This campaign was the very least I could do to help ease her stress during this difficult time. All funds are being directly sent to Rebecca to take care of running and managing a house, copays, deductibles, childcare, and more. Her music has touched all of us and been a balm in times of need.
