Re-Act - Refugee Action Scotland was set up 4 years ago in Edinburgh with the aim of helping with the growing refugee crisis in Europe. We now have a network of supporters throughout Scotland and beyond and have sent aid to many places in Europe and further afield, as well as helping people here in the UK. We organise projects locally to help integrate newly arrived refugees into Scottish society , including playgroups, adult social groups, conversation classes and celebrations. We collaborate with other charities and groups to share transport and information to ensure the cost effective delivery of aid and the ability to adapt quickly to the ever changing situations both abroad and at home.
Everyone involved in our organisation is unpaid. We are very fortunate to have so many supporters in each of three essential areas - Volunteers, Donations of aid and Funding - all of which need to work in combination for Re-Act to be successful in delivering aid to refugees and others in need. In many ways the first two, Volunteers and donations of aid, are more straightforward to achieve than the last – hence this appeal for financial help.
We typically hold no significant reserves of cash since we use any monetary donations to send aid out as quickly as we can by truck, van, container or pallet; as well as meet a variety of other costs as they occur.
Our expenses include fuel and transport costs, vehicle maintenance and charges, premises, utilities and insurances. Also the community activities in Edinburgh. The typical cost to take our lorry full of aid to the charity warehouses in France is around £850 for fuel and ferry fares. If funds allow, we are sometimes able to make small grants towards special projects aimed at improving the lives of refugees stuck in camps.
We are currently aiming to raise £6000 to send 40ft container full of donations to a refugee camp near Erbil, Iraq. As soon as we have both the money and donations in place we will be able to send it.
