Paula Chamberlain is 50 years old. She has two children ages 12 and 17.
She also has Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer.
No one can plan for that. She has struggled to keep working over the last year. Partly to keep hold of some normalcy, while the cancer robs her of her life as she knew it. It has now spread to her brain. She is starting whole brain radiation. The time has come to go off work.
She works for small company. The benefits will not be near enough to keep a roof over her family. It also won’t pay for any equipment. Her shower stall has been pulled apart for years. Repairing it and fitting it is no longer optional. Because the cancer was so far advanced by the time she was diagnosed, Paula had to start with chemo. This means that she does not qualify for the other therapies to be covered now. We are hoping that she can try one in future. But the cost will be anywhere from $2000-$8000 per month.
A little background...Paula had breast cancer in 2015. She underwent chemo and radiation, rang the bell and hoped that was the last of it.
Her back pain started in January last year. Excruciating pain in her spine and tailbone. No one would look into it. 4 physicians sent her away. For more than 6 months. She was told that it was ‘not an emergency’, that there was ‘nothing more I can do for you’, and the most cruel ‘this is not cancer’.
She knew something was wrong. Finally in July she got an MRI. Only because her sister is a nurse and refused to leave without one. Her spine was full of cancer. It was cracking her bones. Even worse, her lungs had also been invaded.
She has marched forward for a year, and endured more than anyone should ever have too. Because she is a survivor. But even the strong need help.
Your help will allow Paula to rest. To spend time with her children. To live her life with dignity.
