Our dad’s health has been steadily declining over the last three years, and last year, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Due to complications from the cancer and his COPD, he now requires full-time hospice care. He wants so badly to be here, at home, so we’re doing our best to make that happen for him.
Our dad spent his life helping and caring for other people. He worked as a carpenter for many years, and he often undercharged people or provided extra work for free, just because it was the kind thing to do. He has cared for his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, always providing his family with a warm place to sleep and good food to eat, never asking for anything in return.
He is also a veteran who served in the navy during the Vietnam War.
Unfortunately, since there needs to be someone with him at all times to care for his needs, we haven’t been able to work. Making and saving money has become impossible. Trust us when we say this is our last resort. We hate to ask for anything when we try so hard to give, just like our dad taught us.
But we don’t want him to worry about money right now. When he asks about our financial situation, he’s so obviously concerned, it breaks our hearts. We want him to be content that his family will be okay now and after he’s passed.
The money we receive will be used to buy material for overdue home repairs (we’ll do all the actual work ourselves). Our roof is leaking and growing mold, and it will not last another winter. Our deck is old and precarious. A tree fell on our shed roof several months ago and we still haven’t been able to fix it. We’ll also use the money for our mother’s urgent dental care, as well as various other medical expenses.
