RAW/à vif - Exhibition in Venice

Donation protected
Hello there! I am Noémie Soula a French design-researcher based in Somerset House in London and I am currently working on a project commissioned by a brand new curators collective called Unbore. They are currently in the process of organising a series of small events - flashows - that would introduce the Bioart and Biodesign discourse in Venice. Flashows are pop-up exhibitions, revealing the work of one artist or designer in an instantaneous, humorous and peculiar manner. In October 2019, they would like to present my project "Raw/à vif" in a solo exhibition.  Because they are a very recent collective and I've graduated one year ago, we do not any capital to rely on for the organisation this three days pop-up exhibition. That is why, we are asking for help to cover the fees related to the shipment of my pieces, rent of the space, my flights, and accommodation as well as material and print fees. Thanks to this £400, it will help the exhibition to run smoothly.  What is the project about? // RAW/à vif The emergence of new technologies like tissue engineering or genetic edition is changing the face of medicine and challenge our current bioethics statements. Pushing always further the limits of the possible and pursuing the quest of making humankind better, those biotechnologies are questioning the essential definition of being human. What is the meaning of designing a human body? How will emerging biotechnologies modify what we define humankind? What will be the consequences of those practices? Raw/ à vif or the unnatural desire to design a human is a project at the crossroad where transhumanism and biology meet, transporting the audience in possible futures where the definition of being human is challenged. // SCENARIOS #1: The Future of Human Cellular Matrix Decellularization - The Matrix Sculptor Human Tissue decellularization is used in biomedical engineering to isolate extracellular matrix (EMC) from all the original cells, leaving a shadow scaffold of the organ which can be used later in regenerative medicine or artificial organs. Years later, the decellularization process is now democratized and easy to perform. Originated from this biomedical technology, a new profession has arisen: the Matrix Sculptor. Instead of using pre-existing human organs that are rare and precious resources, those sculptors are using decellularized connective tissues, like adipose tissue, to sculpt and carve the desired body parts. From heart to ears, the all body’s portions can be modeled - even the ones that are not yet existing... #2: The Future of Tissue Engineering - The Body Parts Farmer Tissue engineering consists of using stem cells - multipotent cells that can be differentiated into any kind of cell - to grows human tissues and/or organs. For this to happen, those cells are injected into a 3D scaffold that has the shape of the desired organ or body part to grow. Pushing forward this biotechnology, independent manufacturers are now offering this service for any person at a reasonable price. Like a car, any part of your body can be produced and changed for a newer piece... #3: The Future of Genetic Edition and Synthetic DNA - The Organ Designer All living beings have Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) within their cells. This molecule contains all of the information necessary to build and maintain an organism. Like a code, DNA carries in its structure the characteristics of an individual and the essential instructions to process for sustaining life from the beginning to the end. The genetic edition and the synthesis of DNA/RNA opened up the range of possibilities: scientists are now able to print genetic sequences enabling us to modify humankind and improve our health conditions by avoiding genetic diseases. An organ design-research team is now concentrating on developing an innovative and unique range of unnatural organs... Why is it important to support us?  Communicating about the future is crucial to raise awareness and make sure that the audience can think and debate about what is their vision about their hopes. Knowing what is happing now to think about tomorrow is a precious gift and as an artist, I want to make sure that the public can have easy access to current complex research topics thanks to humor and strangeness. Science and medicine can be intricated expertise, but I think that being able to understand what is happening now and tomorrow will ease our fears and enhance future innovations by involving us more. My work is here to make room for the audience's thoughts and imagination. The future is made for the people and by the people!  Your support, even little, would mean a lot to me. Indeed, it has been a difficult year after my graduation, juggling between part-time jobs, freelance missions and the development of my own practice. I will always be thankful to the people that will have supported and encouraged me. Thanks to the public, art, and design can be meaningful! Who is Unbore? Unbore fosters and advocates arts, life sciences, and technology intersections through an organisation of a variety of exhibitions, symposia, and smaller-scale events. We hope to build a curious ecosystem of thinkers and doers in Bioart and Biodesign in order to promote social engagement through interdisciplinary international collaboration.  Check out their website as well as Instagram and Facebook pages for more information on their vision for the Unbore. Please, visit their website: https://www.unbore.org/ as well as their GoFundMe page: https://www.gofundme.com/f/the-unbore-flashow-of-noemie-soula.  If you want to know more about my work and have some production updates, please check out my website as well as my Instagram page and Twitter feed! Do not hesitate to message if you have any question regarding my work, I will be happy to write you back!  Thank you so much for your support,  All the best!
