Rapid Response to COVID-19 in NC

This fund is being established as a partnership with Day One Disaster Relief  and supported by community leaders: Mayor Steve Schewel;  City Council Members: Vernetta Alston, Javiera Caballero, DeDreana Freeman, Jillian Johnson, Mark-Anthony Middleton, and Charlie Reece; and members of The Durham County Board of Commissioners and the Durham Board of Educators.

Additional local and state partnerships are currently being developed.

As with other campaigns that I have organized for our community in Durham, I ask that you trust that the funds will be distributed to the most critical need, in the most equitable way possible. I've shown this commitment through previous campaigns including helping to pay down Durham's Lunch Debt, assisting Durham community member's impacted by the explosion last April through Bull City Rebuilds, as a member of the Durham One Fund task force, and most recently in support of residents at McDougald Terrace.

**Aid will be distributed to communities who currently have confirmed COVID-19 diagnoses.**

Any funds raised beyond what is needed help impacted communities will be reserved for future community disaster relief in Durham and North Carolina.

More information: Day One Disaster Relief, a disaster relief non-profit in Durham, North Carolina has established a fundraising campaign to respond to the imminent threat of SARS-COV-2/COVID-19 in North Carolina. The GoFundMe campaign anticipates raising 1 million dollars to meet critical needs in communities in NC where there are confirmed SARS-COV-2/COVID-19 cases.

This fund will address the three concurrent disasters we are currently facing:

1.    The current Coronavirus (SARS-COV-2/COVID-19) pandemic

2.    The loss of income to individuals as a result of businesses closing

3.    Supply chain disruption

Because these three disasters are immense in scale and impact all of our community, the fund needs to be flexible and swift. It will be used to address critical needs, putting the priority of saving human life at the forefront. These critical needs are developing and will be reassessed daily.

As an example, Day One Disaster Relief is already aware that ventilators and medical masks are in limited supply. The organization is actively working on a solution to this problem.

Day One Disaster Relief founder, Jil Christensen states, “It’s important to stress that the availability of and access to funding is the quickest way for organizations to meet critical needs. By donating directly to a disaster relief organization, it allows for flexible and efficient decision-making processes.”

She continues, “We are committed to being transparent about where the money goes, both to those who benefit as well as those who contribute. We understand that publicly donated funds are a collective response from the community should be accessible to our entire community, especially those who are more vulnerable. In the best-case scenario, this means addressing the issue of lost wages. In a more dire scenario, this means procuring lifesaving equipment. Today, I believe we’re looking at the latter situation.”

About DAY ONE: Through strong community relationships, Day One Disaster Relief serves disaster-impacted populations. Since each disaster is unique, a disaster relief solution that is predictable, repeatable, and systematic in nature has been identified as what's needed to make an improved impact.

Day One Disaster Relief was founded during Hurricane Florence to rapidly source and deliver supplies (via air and road) to those affected by the hurricane. We formed as a result of our efforts spearheading the rapid response at the TAC AIR terminal at RDU in September 2018.

We brought together volunteer pilots and NGO’s who have been on the ground in eastern NC, some for 45+ years. We raised the supply chain and engaged the community which resulted in 1500 volunteers throughout the week at RDU. We have continued our work serving the survivors of Hurricanes Michael and Dorian as well as supporting residents evacuated from McDougald Terrace public housing neighborhood in Durham, NC.

Since their inception, Day One has been focused on meeting the direct needs of communities that are often forgotten during disasters. (i.e. farmworkers, poor, frontline, minority, and, under-resourced communities).
