Electric Vehicle (EV) owners based within and outside of Wales have been faced with the dilemma of not being able to easily drive from North to South Wales for several years.
The Welsh Government want to promote clean transportation and cut carbon emissions, but do not fully appreciate the day-to-day issues current EV owners who have already gone over to ‘Zero Tailpipe Emission’ vehicles in Wales face.
Wanting to do the right thing for the environment, we bought a 24kWh electric van in 2016 instead of a diesel van. Although our EV is brilliant for all the local deliveries we do, our Nissan e-NV200 has made life really difficult for us, when we want to travel further through Wales. Sadly although we have made several attempts to contact the right people to remedy the charging infrastructure within Mid Wales, we are still in a similar position we were 3 years ago.
The current lack of charging infrastructure is also causing people to buy petrol and diesel vehicles, when they may have considered an all electric option.
We run a social media campaign called #ChargeUpWales and this campaign is to highlight (and improve) these infrastructure issues, for those people wanting to come to or through Wales. As part of this campaign we now want to fund some rapid EV charge points within Mid Wales, rather than wait forever for Local Authorities to implement something, which probably won’t be fit for purpose.
So we are looking at raising money for some 25kW Wall Mounted Rapid Chargers from Rolec EV. These currently cost £7630 + VAT (supply only) and require connection to a 3 phase system. This is not the entire solution to our current infrastructure problems, but will certainly help get current EV owners to where they need to be a lot faster.
As soon as we hit £10000, we will install a charge point in Newtown, Powys. Money raised after this will go towards a second, third, fourth, etc, charge point which we would help find a suitable site for in order to help open up Mid Wales to EV’s.
I am willing to donate my time to oversee installation works and find suitable charging sites. If anyone else can help with this, please contact me on Twitter - @RichMWPHS
