Ranson Boys College Trip!

WHAT:
Character Camp is an innovative approach to school discipline.  Serving as an alternative to out-of-school suspension, Ranson IB's vision is to provide character development and mentorship that will support 45, 6-8th grade, male scholars in improving their behavior. Character Camp will utilize restorative justice practices and provide a team-building and social/emotional intelligence curriculum to guide our boys in developing necessary skills to help them not only get to college, but through college.

Each week, the group of boys will complete a series of activities that will promote literacy skills and self-expression.  Additionally, they will set goals as a team to work toward throughout the week.  Each week they earn their goal will bring them one step closer to the Big Benefit--an all expenses paid trip to Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill. 

Our boys need to see themselves as young men with incredible potential. What a better place to see that than in our hallways, and then on the grounds of the state’s two most prestigious universities in North Carolina.

WHY:
We want to prove to our boys that college IS accessible for them.  Each time we suspend a child, we are exponentially increasing the possibility he will drop out of school.  By providing an alternative to suspension, we are able to provide mentorship for our boys and teach them that school is a place to learn and grow--not just academically, but as a successful, contributing member of a community.
