Olivia's Medical Fund

Olivia is the youngest daughter (age 14) of Randy Smith. As you may know, Randy's 3 children live in Louisiana with their mother.  Olivia recently started complaining of hip pain and her mother took her to a Pediatric Orthopedist. X-Rays showed a spot near the head of her femur and an MRI was ordered for the next day. Three days later, the family had to visit a Pediatric Orthopedic Oncologist with a diagnosis of possible cancer.  Another MRI was ordered along with blood work.

The doctor gave three different possibilities—A Chondroblastoma Bone Tumor, a Giant Cell Tumor or a bone infection.  Olivia was scheduled for surgery the next day; this required that they drill a hole through the leg bone to reach the middle of the femoral head and a then a biopsy was taken, however the Pathologist could not confirm a diagnosis at that time. She was to stay in the hospital overnight, however there were a few issues that would require that she stay for the next 2 days.  While in the hospital, the pathology report came back as a Benign Chondroblastoma. This is a rare tumor that grows quickly and can reoccur.

Olivia had 2 surgeries within 4 days; the tumor was removed and the hole from the tumor and drilled tunnel was filled with transplant bone and a metal plate applied.  Olivia is now looking at 6-8 weeks recovery with physical therapy. Olivia needs a lot of home equipment, including a hospital bed, wheelchair, walker, crutches and beside commode.  The medical equipment company requires that they pay a deposit of $2000.00 as Olivia’s mother has not reached her medical deductible of $5000.00

As there is a chance that this may reoccur, Olivia will have to have follow ups with X-Rays and CT scans every 3-6 months for the next 5 years.  Olivia and her family have a long way to go and even with insurance, will incur some very large out of pocket medical expenses in excess of $10,000+ and Randy will need to make trips back and forth between Texas and Louisiana for visits and Olivia’s doctor appointments.

Olivia was sent home on Sunday, November 19th, but was re-admitted to the hospital today, November 22nd as she has an infection and fever and will have to spend her Thanksgiving in the hospital instead of at home with family. Needless to say, this is very upsetting news. Please keep Randy, Olivia, and their family in your prayers.

On Olivia and Randy’s behalf, I am asking that you reach out and help if you can. Even the smallest amount can make a difference!  We appreciate all of your prayers and donations.
