My Volunteer Trip to Nicaragua


Hello! My name is Randall Goodwyn.  I am a 4th-year Kinesiology student at the University of Victoria. I will be traveling to a rural community in Nicaragua for one week in February 2018 with the UVic Chapter of the non-profit organization, Global Medical Brigade. The purpose of the organization and this trip is to establish sustainable health care practices in a local community. As volunteers we will be taking vitals and patient history in triage, shadowing licensed doctors in medical consultations, and assisting in a pharmacy under the direction of licensed pharmacists. While in Nicaragua, we will be working with our in-country team and the local community to provide medical follow-ups as well as to inspire the community health workers to maintain a sustainable & consistent level of health care for community members going-forward.

It will cost $2,200 for me to travel (air & ground transportation) with the brigade team and to live in Nicaragua for the duration of the volunteer trip. Any funds raised above the travel and living costs will go towards purchasing essential medications, vaccines and hygiene products for the patients such as toothbrushes & toothpaste, soap, shampoo and glasses for impaired vision. We will take all these products with us for distribution during or following our tenure in Nicaragua. I am contributing $1,000.  Our payment deadline is  January 30th so with December exams and the Uni break behind me, I’m now focused on this fundraising challenge!
