Dear Friends,
We are asking for your help to pay for unusual medical expenses and to help us catch up on our regular monthly bills for the last three months, essentially to stay afloat. We both have complex medical issues--Gene has had 3 reconstructive back surgeries and one hip replacement in 4 years, and has Parkinsons' Disease which requires ongoing treatment and supplements which are not covered by insurance. Marianne is recovering from her first hip replacement surgery and needs a second hip replacement due to congenital Cerebral Palsy.
About Us
Gene served in the Peace Corp and Marianne has served our church for many years. Gene is a graduate of Gonzaga University and did post-graduate studies at Portland State. Marianne is a graduate of Feldenkrais Movement Work.
Here's Our Story - "You Can't Make This Up!"
Four years ago, Gene was told he would need major back reconstruction surgery for degenerating discs. The next day he was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease. (Devastating news.) What we thought would be one successful back surgery turned into 3 major back surgeries over three and a half years. Unfortunately, these 3 surgeries and recoveries, and Gene's need for treatment for Parkinsons', has made the healing for both more complicated, prolonged, and financially taxing. Our total medical co-pays and unreimbursed medical expenses have been approximatly $8,000 to date.
It Never Rains, But It Pours
During this same time, our little poodle, Ginger Darling, suddenly fell very ill and needed emergency surgery to save her life. Ginger is so dear to us, so joyful, happy and bright, that there was no doubt in our mind that we would do whatever we could to save her life. This emergency surgery totaled $5,400--$2,000 of which was paid for by our family and friends who know and love her, the rest we are paying off on a monthly basis. Right now we are behind on our payments.
Then this Spring, due to a Parkinsons' fall, Gene broke his hip and required surgery just a week before Marianne was scheduled for her first hip replacement. Marianne postponed her surgery until August and each of us are still recovering. In the last 3 days. we received our hospital co-pay bill for Gene's hip replacement surgery and rehab in the amount of $1,425.
What We've Done To Weather This Storm
It's been a long haul to say the least. A lot of courage, pain and healing, persistence, late or no-sleep nights and unlimited faith have been required of us during these years. And while we are exhausted, we are grateful, not only for the medical help and healing we've been given, but also for the strengthening of our faith and the practice of "going beyond ourselves" that these challenges have demanded. And none of these things would have been possible without the Spiritual Help and Blessings which we have been so gracefully given.
Until the last three months, we have been able to weather this storm with the gracious help of our family, but now we find ourselves both financially depleted and physically exhausted, and need help with our medical bills as well as to catch up with our regular monthly bills. We urgently need $5,000 to stay afloat.
