Raising Funds For Flint Police

This year the brothers of Phi Kappa Psi at Michigan State University have chosen to help raise funds for the Flint Police Department. The Flint Police are tasked with protecting a financially struggling community. They’re extremely under-staffed, under-budgeted, and have been fighting to combat rising crime in a tough community. The New York Time’s article “Inside A Broken Police Department in Flint, MI” highlights the serious problems faced by law enforcement and the community.

“Sergeant Robert Frost works the lobster shift (Late night). He, like many Flint police officers, has been laid off and called back to work three times over the past dozen years, because Flint is too poor to pay him. “We’ve got, like, eight people working at any given time for a hundred thousand people, and there’s no way to be proactive,” he told me. “You get one call, you handle that call, you do the best you can, because there is nothing you can do about the other fifty calls that are sitting there.”

A recent Netflix documentary called “Flint Town” also examines the tough policing conditions and struggles in the community.

The brothers of Phi Kappa Psi at Michigan State want to help directly support the Flint Police Department. Through Michigan State University, Phi Kappa Psi will be hosting the Jog For Justice 5k. The event is a run/walk through MSU campus taking place on Sunday November 4th. Jog For Justice is open to students, family, members of the community, and our alumni. We hope to make a large contribution to the Flint Police Department through the 5k and smaller fundraisers throughout the semester as well.

The goal through the Jog for Justice is to provide Flint Police Department’s Crime Area Target Team (CATT) squad with uniforms and equipment. We encourage you to donate to our event in the way of cash, time, or spreading awareness of the events surrounding Flint, Michigan.
