Raise the Roof for Roberta

Our mother is a kind, generous, fun-loving, selfless, and caring person. She has always worked hard at a full time job, often working overtime, to provide us everything we needed and most of the things we wanted. She is a wonderful mother and the best grandma ever. She has always cared about others more than herself; always giving her everything to everyone. Even under the current circumstances, she worries more about how her loved ones are coping than how she is doing.

In the beginning of June, three months short of her retirement date, my mother went in for a chest x-ray following a mild case of walking pneumonia and came back with a diagnosis of stage 4 lung cancer. At this appointment, she was told she could not to return to work. Her cancer, large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, is a rare and aggressive form of cancer with a generally poor prognosis. She doesn't qualify for surgery, radiation therapy, or any targeted therapies. The best and only treatment option at this point is palliative chemotherapy with follow-up Neulasta injections to stimulate healthy white blood cell growth. A recent follow up appointment showed that the chemotherapy has been effective in shrinking the tumors. She feels well, and her prognosis has improved so we are hopeful that her current chemotherapy regimen will continue to work! Even though she has health insurance, she has had unexpected medical costs. The treatments she is receiving are expensive and her out of pocket financial responsibilities are causing unneeded stress. Our hope is to raise as much money as we can to at least alleviate some of the financial burden cancer has put on our mother.
Our mom has always been a responsible, hard-working woman. She's planned ahead and saved, worked overtime, weekends, and holidays. She was supposed to retire and go see the world; backpacking in Istanbul, wearing fruit hats in Havana... We do not want to see cancer take away everything she has worked for.

When we originally discussed fundraising as an option, our mom was reluctant to ask for help and said, “There are other people that need help more than me.” Our mom is strong and she is a fighter but right now we know she needs as many people in her corner as she can get. The money recieved will be used to pay medical bills and help support her financially through the month of October.

Thank you so much for reading her story and we are grateful for your help!
