Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) is a genetic disease passed down by the mother which causes sudden onset loss of vision. It affects approximately 1 in 50,000 people, and typically affects young males. Around 95% of those affected by LHON may lose their vision before 50 years of age.
