I am happy to announce, ALL FUNDS WILL BE MATCHED by the Satterberg Foundation, up to $8,000!
I am collaborating with a local produce stand to create a mural on Rainier avenue, a main drag in South Seattle, a neighborhood known at one point for the most diverse zip code in the country.
The owner, Kevin, grew up nearby and has seen the neighborhood change dramatically over the years as many of the people he knew have moved away due to rapid gentrification. He aspires to bring clean and fresh produce to his communities and to support local farmers. With mounting stressors such as the reconstruction of intersection making his business unavailable, constant vandalism and theft, increasing rent and competition, he is now at risk for displacement. instead of reacting to the pressures, Kevin has decided to seek out for community support and creative collaborative solutions.
This mural will serve to bring vibrant color to a high traffic intersection, preserve the unique culture of South Seattle, and attract customers to support a struggling local business owner. A mural says "we are here to stay". It represents the commitment we have to our community, and a vision for a future in which we are thriving, not just surviving.
My hope is that people like Kevin who know and love South Seattle see a little bit of themselves in the mural that goes up here.
This may be the last mural I paint before November when I move away from Seattle, where I lived my entire life. I would be grateful to leave behind this goodbye to the city I love.
