Urgent Help for Dogs in Jordan

Donation protected
Dear friends,

I know there is lot going in the world right now, so THANK YOU for visiting this page. Al Rahmeh is a voluntary based organization, the main fund source is the few dedicated members and donations, and the dogs need all financial support that anyone can give at the moment.

Learn more about this shelter, Al-Rahmeh Means 'Mercy' in English:

Al-Rahmeh for Animals is a shelter in Amman that helps animals through rescue projects, adoption, fostering and education programs. This small organization, which is powered by a few dedicated members, one full-time employee and a handful of volunteers, is currently caring for more than 45 dogs and 10 cats.

I recently had my own experience with Al-Rahmeh that I'd like to share with you now.

Jordan is home to a breed of dog called the Canaan Dog, widely considered by Jordanians to be an unsuitable house pet. This renders them unadoptable, which is why there are so many on the streets of Amman. 95% of the animals at Al-Rahmeh are Canaan Dogs.

During my last trip to Jordan, I saw one of these dogs, only about a month old, all alone and huddled under a car, sheltering from the sun. She was skinny, covered in ticks and fleas, with dirty, matted fur. I gave her water and scratches and love, but the comments and laughter from passersby made me realize that this would probably be the only kindness she'd receive in what promised to be a short, harsh life. I looked at her little face and knew I couldn't just leave her there.

That puppy is a dog many of you now know as Poppy.  We joke that she is a handful, but really, she is a smart, spirited, strong-willed dog who is sweet, loving and a joy to have around.

The minute I put out the call for help, a network of generous and selfless people in Jordan sprang to action, most notably Al-Rahmeh and Al Ma'wa, a nature and wildlife reserve. From veterinary care and de-worming to securing paperwork so that Poppy could board a plane and leave the country with me, Al-Rahmeh was there. Looking back, working with Al-Rahmeh, and getting to know Poppy over those few days, were some of the most inspiring and happy times I've spent in Jordan. (And I've had some incredible experiences in Jordan!)

I know this isn't a situation limited to Jordan. Unwanted animals are a very real problem in our own backyards, everywhere. So why am I advocating for a shelter in Jordan and not closer to home? Because this is what happened to me and I am speaking from my own experience. Plus, if you love living with dogs, you probably have a Canaan Dog to thank for that. (One of the oldest and rarest breeds, it is thought that Canaan Dogs could have been the first dogs to initiate a relationship with humans).

How your donation will continue to help:

Al-Rahmeh’s annual costs run about $60,000 USD. The most pressing expenses include: vet services, rental fee for the shelter, caretaker salaries and pet travel.  I am asking you to please make a monetary donation, sparing what you can during these difficult times.

You may consider sponsoring a dog for a full year for $1,500 USD

Thank you so much for considering Al-Rahmeh as the recipient of your donation. For information about Al-Rahmeh visit here:

President and Vice-President of Al-Rahmeh Lubna Kasbari and Noor Qusous (@rahmehforanimals ), joined me on Instagram Live in June. View their discussion here: https://www.instagram.com/tv/CB8VJG4Hg8M/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link.

They talked about the work of Al-Rahmeh: how they are dismantling stereotypes about street dogs, caring for 45+ animals and coordinating adoptions, all while juggling day jobs.

THANK YOU!

Warmly,
