INVITATION TO HELP US ESTABLISH THE ETTY HILLESUM HOUSE
Dear all,
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, a unique opportunity has arisen. The birthplace of Etty Hillesum in Middelburg, the Netherlands, is now available to be transformed into a place where her story and texts can be made tangible for and accessible to a wider audience than ever before. The stately mansion at Molenwater 77, in the Zeeland capital where Etty was born on 15 January 1914, stands awaiting our energy and determination to create the Etty Hillesum House for the most extensive range of activities ever dedicated to Etty’s legacy. We ask for your support.
The Diaries and Letters
In 2017 Etty Hillesum was named the greatest Citizen of Middelburg of all time…for good reason! With her diaries and letters from Transit Camp Westerbork, she left a historical and literary document of inestimable value. As the Second World War engulfed the world and National Socialism held Europe in its devastating grip, Etty Hillesum remained able to describe the events of her time. She shared her thoughts on freedom and autonomy, solidarity and the fight against hatred. And she recorded the innermost recesses of her soul, speaking of God and fate, human suffering and love. Her insights have proven over time to be of universal value. They are a source of inspiration worldwide.
In June 1943, shortly before her final departure to Transit Camp Westerbork, Etty Hillesum gave her diaries to her roommate, imploring her to hand them to the writer Klaas Smelik after the war. Etty wanted him to arrange for their publication if she did not return from the camps. On September 7, 1943, Etty Hillesum was deported to the extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau where she was murdered within weeks of arrival, one of almost one million Jews killed there. It was Klaas Smelik’s son, Klaas A.D. Smelik Jr., who found a publisher in the 1970’s – Jan Geurt Gaarlandt. This led in 1981, to the publication of a selection of her diaries under the title Het Verstoorde leven (An Interrupted Life). Since that time, several publications encompassing Etty’s complete diaries and letters have followed, and scholars around the world have published their own essays, lectures, and books on her work. Etty Hillesum’s wish to become a chronicler of her time – to speak a ‘few words after the war’ has been granted.The Etty Hillesum Research Center (EHOC), was founded in 2006 at the University of Gent by Prof. dr. Klaas Smelik, who worked tirelessly to make Etty’s texts known to the world. Since 2015, EHOC has been located in the Zeeland Archives in Middelburg. Today, as Etty Hillesum is indeed, recognized, studied, and her insights are appreciated around the globe, the Research Center is poised to move into an expanded space at the Etty Hillesum House. In this new home we will continue to magnify the Hillesum legacy and extend her impact far into the 21st century.
The Renovation of Etty Hillesum’s Birth House in Middelburg

The Etty Hillesum House Foundation will move into Etty's birthplace on 1 January 2021. This means that our fixed costs and investments will begin on that date.
At this moment, Etty’s birth house is a dental practice and there is a lot of work that needs to be done. The ground floor needs to be renovated with an eye to preserving and bringing back the authentic elements that are still present. The spacious rooms need to be transformed into exhibition spaces where the story of Etty Hillesum and the Jewish history of Zeeland and Middelburg can be presented. Meanwhile, the EHOC will have its own special place, adjacent to the garden. The front room will be transformed in a lovely café with a view on the Molenwaterpark.
These plans mean that we must raise a minimum amount of € 150,000 to begin work, with our maximum target amount being € 250,000 to be able to open our doors in the summer of 2021 with expanded activities.

Etty Hillesum's ideas and thoughts are still highly relevant. From questions of how to relate as an individual in society, to themes of polarization and anti-Semitism, to subjects as solidarity and freedom – Etty spoke to the permanent challenges that that we still face. These issues give us abundant reason to safeguard the history and legacy of Etty Hillesum for future generations. Establishing the Etty Hillesum House will contribute toward this end.

The Etty Hillesum House will be a place where everyone is welcome to learn, to wonder and reflect, to enter into dialogue, to acquire new knowledge and to deepen existing knowledge. The approach at the Etty Hillesum House will be multidisciplinary so that we can do justice to the multiple interests and large heart of Etty Hillesum.
What we will do
The Etty Hillesum House will be a place where Etty’s distinctive legacy, encompassing the four pillars - science, education, art and culture - will be presented and disseminated. From the Etty Hillesum House we will spread historical knowledge and insight about dictatorship, persecution and oppression and we will work to raise awareness and combat contemporary anti-Semitism. We will organize exhibitions, lectures, symposia and debates, arts and cultural activities, and educational programs for school-age children and learners of all ages. There will even be a cozy café with good coffee and Jewish-style pastries where visitors can meet for a chat or read a good book.
Who we are
Five women have come together to guide this project from vision to reality. We are members of the Board of the Foundation for the Etty Hillesum House, Middelburg. In forming this Board, we have dedicated ourselves to the necessary work to set up this special place where the legacy of this special writer can be presented and safeguarded for future generations.

Beste mensen,
Wij vragen jullie namens de Stichting Etty Hillesum Huis Middelburg mee te helpen met het opzetten van het Etty Hillesum Huis. De unieke kans doet zich voor om nu, in het 75e bevrijdingsjaar, het verhaal en de nagelaten teksten van de Joodse dagboekschrijfster Etty Hillesum (1914 – 1943) voor iedereen tastbaar en toegankelijk te maken.
Vanuit de vier pijlers; wetenschap, educatie, kunst & cultuur willen wij de herinnering aan Etty Hillesum en haar lotgenoten levend houden en het gedachtegoed van deze bijzondere schrijfster vanuit verschillende disciplines in beeld brengen en borgen voor toekomstige generaties. Daarnaast willen wij historische kennis en inzicht over een periode van dictatuur, vervolging en onderdrukking verspreiden en bij te dragen aan bewustwording- en bestrijding van het hedendaagse antisemitisme. Dit gaan wij doen door het inrichten van tentoonstellingen, het organiseren van lezingen, symposia en debatten, kidscolleges, kunst-en culturele activiteiten en het ontwikkelen van educatieve programma’s.
Benodigde middelen
Om onze plannen en activiteiten te kunnen realiseren hebben wij ten minste een bedrag van €150.000,- nodig.

De verbouwing van Etty’s geboortehuis in Middelburg

We betrekken als Stichting het geboortehuis van Etty per 1 januari 2020 en dat betekent dat dan onze vaste kosten en investeringen benodigd zijn (al dan niet in fasen). Voor het zover is, is in het geboortehuis, dat nu nog een tandartspraktijk is, nog een hoop werk te doen. De gehele begane grond zal verbouwd moeten worden waarbij we de nog aanwezige authentieke elementen willen behouden en daar waar mogelijk ook nog wat authentieke elementen willen terugbrengen. Er komt een expositieruimte waar het verhaal van Etty Hillesum en de geschiedenis van de Joden in Zeeland en Middelburg gepresenteerd zullen worden. Daarnaast wordt een uitnodigende ruimte voor het EHOC (Etty Hillesum Onderzoekscentrum) gecreëerd. De voorkamer, met uitzicht op het Molenwaterpark, wordt een café met ruimte voor wisselexposities en boekenverkoop.
Voor al deze plannen hebben wij minimaal € 150.000,- nodig om op te kunnen starten, maar een bedrag van € 250.000,- zou ons bestaanszekerheid bieden voor meerdere jaren en ons de mogelijkheid geven om onze activiteiten in de nabije toekomst nog verder uit te breiden. In de zomer van 2021 zullen wij de deuren openen.
De dagboeken en brieven
In 2017 werd Etty Hillesum uitgeroepen tot grootste Middelburger aller tijden. Dat is niet zomaar!
Met haar dagboeken en Westerborkbrieven heeft zij een historisch en literair document van onschatbare waarde nagelaten. Terwijl de Tweede Wereldoorlog zich voltrok en het nationaalsocialisme Europa in zijn vernietigende greep hield was Etty Hillesum in staat de gebeurtenissen van haar tijd zeer treffend te beschrijven. In haar dagboeken legde zij ook haar ideeën vast over vrijheid, autonomie en solidariteit, het bestrijden van haat, het lot, God, het menselijk lijden en de liefde.
Kort voor haar definitieve vertrek naar doorgangskamp Westerbork gaf Etty Hillesum haar dagboeken aan een huisgenote met de boodschap deze na de oorlog aan de schrijver Klaas Smelik te overhandigen. Hij moest dan voor publicatie zorgen, wanneer zij niet terug zou keren uit de kampen. Op 7 september 1943 werd Etty Hillesum gedeporteerd naar vernietigingskamp Auschwitz-Birkenau waar zij in het najaar van 1943 werd vermoord omdat zij Joods was.
Nadat Klaas Smelik in de jaren vijftig van de vorige eeuw tevergeefs had geprobeerd uitgevers te interesseren voor de dagboeken van Etty Hillesum was het uiteindelijk zijn zoon Klaas A.D. Smelik die in Jan Geurt Gaarlandt een uitgever vond. Dit leidde in 1981 tot een eerste publicatie van een selectie van haar dagboekteksten onder de titel: Het Verstoorde Leven. Dagboek van Etty Hillesum,1941-1943. Al snel volgde meerdere publicaties van haar teksten en brieven en verscheen haar werk ook in meerdere vertalingen. Haar wens om kroniekschrijfster van haar tijd te worden kwam zo alsnog uit!
Gedachtegoed en nalatenschap Etty Hillesum
Etty’s gedachten zijn van universele waarde gebleken en wereldwijd is zij voor heel veel mensen een grote bron van inspiratie. Het gedachtegoed van Etty Hillesum blijkt nog steeds onverminderd actueel te zijn. De vraag hoe om te gaan met thema’s als vijanddenken, polarisatie, antisemitisme maar ook solidariteit en vrijheid is ook nu nog heel actueel. Juist daarom moet de nalatenschap en de geschiedenis van Etty Hillesum een blijvende plek krijgen, nu en voor de komende generaties.
Het Etty Hillesum Huis wordt een plek waar de nalatenschap van de schrijfster vanuit vier pijlers belicht zal worden: wetenschap, educatie, kunst en cultuur. We doen dit door middel van tentoonstellingen, debatten, lezingen, symposia, en kunst- en cultuurmanifestaties. Het Etty Hillesum Onderzoekscentrum (EHOC), dat in 2006 werd opgericht door Klaas A.D. Smelik aan de Universiteit van Gent (2006) en dat zich sinds 2015 in het Zeeuws Archief bevindt, zal ook onderdak vinden in het Molenwater 77. Er komt een sfeervol café, met goede koffie en Joodse zoetigheden waar ruimte is om met elkaar in gesprek te gaan of een goed boek te lezen. Het Huis moet een plek worden waar iedereen zich welkom voelt, waar je nieuwe kennis kunt opdoen, waar je je kunt verwonderen, waar je mensen kunt ontmoeten en met elkaar in debat kunt gaan.
Wie wij zijn
Het bestuur van de Stichting Het Etty Hillesum Huis Middelburg bestaat uit vijf vrouwen die de unieke kans hebben aangegrepen om de nalatenschap van Etty Hillesum te presenteren en te borgen voor komende generaties.

‘Etty Hillesum heeft met haar dagboekteksten en brieven een document van onschatbare waarde nagelaten. In een tijd van onderdrukking en terreur wist zij haar autonomie te bewaren en zelf invulling te geven aan haar lot om de kroniekschrijfster van haar tijd te worden en zo iets te kunnen betekenen voor de naoorlogse generaties. Vanuit haar geboortehuis willen wij gehoor geven aan Etty’s wens, ‘een klein woordje mee te spreken na de oorlog’.

‘Leven zonder haat, op die manier stond Etty Hillesum in het leven.Via haar dagboekschriften weten we hoe zij dat deed in de Tweede Wereldoorlog, terwijl zij als Joodse vrouw moest vrezen voor haar leven. De tijden zijn nu minder extreem, maar haat, racisme en anti-semitisme zijn er nog steeds. Hoe mooi is het om deze en toekomstige generaties te laten zien hoe je zonder haat kunt leven. En dat nog wel op haar geboorteplek in Middelburg, mensenrechtenstad en stad van de Four Freedom Awards’.

‘Het geboortehuis van Etty Hillesum is een plek die anders is dan alle andere. Hier begon Etty's leven. En vanuit die plek willen wij haar teksten en haar genuanceerde gedachten verdiepen. Huizen zijn fragmenten van een verleden. Ze zijn leesbaar als een gelaagde en diepe herinnering die alleen terugkeert naar het heden als we bereid zijn haar te reactiveren’.

Samen met al deze betrokkenen, onze ambassadeurs Frits Barend en Aline Pennewaard en met jullie kunnen wij het Etty Hillesum Huis realiseren en van haar geboortehuis een tastbare plek van herinnering maken. De Joodse dagboekschrijfster Etty Hillesum, die inmiddels wereldfaam heeft verkregen, keert daarmee terug naar haar geboortehuis aan het Molenwater 77 in Middelburg.
Wij zijn natuurlijk heel blij met iedereen die een donatie wil overmaken en zo een steentje bijdraagt aan de realisatie van het Etty Hillesum Huis en in aanloop naar het eindresultaat van onze verbouwing en start onze lopende kosten te dekken!
